Excerpt from Chautauqua Library of English History and Literature, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Times to the Later Norman Period The present volume is the first installment of a work which has been planned to provide a cheap and comprehensive library of English History and English Literature from the earliest times to our own day. It is especially designed for the use of those members of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle who have completed the first course in English History, (dr. Vin cent's Outline of English History, and Green's Short His tory of the English and who are now prepared to com bine the study of those two high departments of human thought - literature and history. This combination is recom mended because of a deep conviction that the study of the liter ature of a people is part of the study of its history. No one can study history worthily without learning a good deal about literature, and no one can study literature rightly without learn ing a good deal about history. The aim in compiling this volume has been not merely to give the last results of inquiry into Early English History and Liter ature, but to put students of history on a course of training which, if faithfully pursued, shall secure to them perpetual profit and pleasure. In order to give as large an amount as possible of those early English translations which are scattered through many ex pensive volumes, and are not easily accessible to the general reader, the historical selections for the Celtic, Roman, and Saxon periods have been confined chiefly to summaries of lead ing events, in the hope, however, that all who use these pages will make frequent reference to Edward Freeman's Old En glish History, which is the best short sketch of English History before the Conquest. To render the work more complete as a student's manual, a guide analysis of the leading points considered is given at the commencement of each chapter or section and a course of reading has been subjoined to the several periods. Excerpt from Chautauqua Library of English History and Literature, Vol. 3: The Wars of the Roses For the period of English history treated in this volume we are fortunate in possessing an unrivaled interpreter in our great dramatic poet, Shakespeare. A regular sequence of historical plays exhibit to us not only the general character of each successive reign, but nearly the whole chain of leading events, from the days of Richard II. to the death of Richard III. at Bosworth. Following the guidance of such a master mind, we realize for ourselves the men and actions of the period in a way we cannot do in any other epoch. And this is the more important, as the age itself, especially toward the close, is one of the most obscure in English history. During the period of the Wars of the Roses, we have, comparatively speaking, very few contemporary narratives of what took place, and any thing like a general history of the times was not written till a much later date. But the doings of that stormy age - the sad calamities endured by kings - the sudden changes of fortune in great men - the glitter of chivalry and the horrors of civil war - all left a deep impression upon the mind of the nation, which was kept alive by vivid traditions of the past at the time that our great dramatist wrote. Hence, notwithstanding the scantiness of records and the meagerness of ancient chronicles, we have singularly little difficulty in understanding the spirit and character of the times. - Gairdner. "Greenfield and Robinson state in their preface that they have sought to include every book, monograph, article, note, and review published on Old English literature since the invention of printing. They have come as close to doing so as two descendants of Adam possibly can, undeterred by the trouble at Babel. (By my count, thirty different languages are represented in the bibliography, sixteen of them frequently.) Rarely has any bibliography in any other discipline equalled the thoroughness and accuracy of this one. It is a contribution for which Greenfield and Robinson will long receive from their colleagues that measure of gratitude reserved for Old English scholarship's most bounteous treasure-givers."--Carl T. Berkhout"What astonishes is how well [Greenfield and Robinson] have succeeded in what they set out to do, how uniformly excellent their volume is in all its profusion of information and detail. . . . The Bibliography will bring scholars that peculiar joy in complex intellectual work done well that only they know; it will be immensely useful, virtually indispensable--if not a vade mecum because of its size . . . then at least an enchiridion with which they will fight their battles on behalf of Beowulf and Brunanburb and the Blickling Homilies."--The Old English Newsletter"[A] volume long needed, [the Bibliography] will now become an indispensable reference work for every student of Old English literature from the beginner to the acknowledged authority."--British Book News
