Abstract: Atherosclerosis and hypertension, common causes of death in adults, may originate in childhood. Genetic, environmental, and nutritional factors may contribute to the disorders, but may also have preventive value in children. Investigations concerning the earliest origins of these disorders are presented, with a focus on those areas of research which represent potential medical strategies for prevention of atherosclerosis and hypertension. The predictive value of nutrition, obesity, cigarette smoking, plasma lipids and lipoproteins, serum cholesterol, heredity, blood pressure, and other risk factors is examined. Sociological and cultural dietary studies, such as the design of lipid profiles in children, are described; these are aimed at reducing cardiovascular risks in certain populations by fat-modified diets. The effect of socioeconomic status on the development of obesity in children is evaluated.

Most epidemiologic studies of risk factors for atherosclerosis have been conducted in adult populations, yet there is now evidence that the vascular disease process begins at a young age. This book reviews recent findings that allow physicians to identify and manage children and adolescents who are at the highest risk for the development of premature cardiovascular disease in later life. It covers cholesterol levels, blood pressure, body size, obesity, coronary artery calcification and carotid artery thickness, and discusses the identification, familial aggregation, tracking and management of each of these risk factors.

This book discusses all aspects of non-pharmacologic approaches to primary and secondary CVD prevention. It highlights the strength of evidence for particular diet styles in CVD prevention, including plant-based diets, the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, and low-carbohydrate diets. Chapters present evidence and future directions for diet and nutrition in diseases related to CVD, such as dyslipidemia, cardiometabolic disease (pre-diabetes, the metabolic syndrome, type-2 diabetes mellitus), and obesity. Finally, the book reviews novel and emerging aspects of dietary intervention in CVD prevention, such as dietary approaches to inflammation and the role of the microbiome in CVD. Up-to-date, evidence-based, and clinically oriented, Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease: Nutritional and Dietary Approaches is an essential resource for physicians, residents, fellows, and medical students in cardiology, clinical nutrition, family medicine, endocrinology, and lipidology.
