After China launches its attack on Taiwan, America will respond. But how far will the US go to keep Taiwan out of Beijing's control? America will have to use its bases in Japan. Will Japan be ready for involvement in combat for the first time since WWII? Russia wants to make money selling equipment, weapons and fuel to the Chinese war machine. But if China wins in Taiwan, will it stop there? Or will it begin to eye the over 4,000 kilometer long border it shares with Russia? China's invasion of Taiwan might also fail because of the Americans. Will China then quietly accept defeat? Or will it use its nuclear weapons to punish the US for intervening? If nuclear war does break out between the US and China, will Russia be able to stay on the sidelines? This time, even Russia's most capable agents might not be able to save their country from disaster.

This is a new analysis of the key issues facing Chinese policy makers in their approach towards Taiwan. This is one of the most tense and potentially explosive relationships in world politics. This book explains succinctly the impetus, the methods and the consequences if China is to use force, a prospect that has become greater following the return of President Chen Shui-bian to power in Taiwan for a second term in 2004. If China Attacks Taiwan shows how in reality there can be no real winner in such an eventuality and how the consequences would be dire not just for Taiwan and China, but East Asia as a whole. Whether China will use force depends ultimately on how its policy making apparatus assess potential US intervention, whether its armed forces can subdue Taiwan and counter US military involvement, as well as on its assessment of the likely consequences. Given the extremely high probability of American involvement this volume appeals to not only scholars and students working on China, its foreign policy and the security and prosperity of East Asia, but also to policy makers and journalists interested in China’s rise and its defense policy, Taiwan’s security and development, regional stability as well as US policy toward China and the East Asia region generally. This book is essential for understanding China’s efforts to achieve a ‘peaceful rise’, which requires it to transform itself into a global power not by the actual use of force but by diplomacy backed up by rapidly expanding military power. This book is an excellent resource for all students and scholars of military and security studies, Asian (China/Taiwan) studies and international relations

Taiwan "is becoming the most dangerous flash point in the world for a possible war that involves the United States, China, and probably other major powers," warn Robert D. Blackwill, Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) Henry A. Kissinger senior fellow for U.S. foreign policy, and Philip Zelikow, University of Virginia White Burkett Miller professor of history. In a new Council Special Report, The United States, China, and Taiwan: A Strategy to Prevent War, the authors argue that the United States should change and clarify its strategy to prevent war over Taiwan. "The U.S. strategic objective regarding Taiwan should be to preserve its political and economic autonomy, its dynamism as a free society, and U.S.-allied deterrence-without triggering a Chinese attack on Taiwan." "We do not think it is politically or militarily realistic to count on a U.S. military defeat of various kinds of Chinese assaults on Taiwan, uncoordinated with allies. Nor is it realistic to presume that, after such a frustrating clash, the United States would or should simply escalate to some sort of wide-scale war against China with comprehensive blockades or strikes against targets on the Chinese mainland." "If U.S. campaign plans postulate such unrealistic scenarios," the authors add, "they will likely be rejected by an American president and by the U.S. Congress." But, they observe, "the resulting U.S. paralysis would not be the result of presidential weakness or timidity. It might arise because the most powerful country in the world did not have credible options prepared for the most dangerous military crisis looming in front of it." Proposing "a realistic strategic objective for Taiwan, and the associated policy prescriptions, to sustain the political balance that has kept the peace for the last fifty years," the authors urge the Joe Biden administration to affirm that it is not trying to change Taiwan's status; work with its allies, especially Japan, to prepare new plans that could challenge Chinese military moves against Taiwan and help Taiwan defend itself, yet put the burden of widening a war on China; and visibly plan, beforehand, for the disruption and mobilization that could follow a wider war, but without assuming that such a war would or should escalate to the Chinese, Japanese, or American homelands. "The horrendous global consequences of a war between the United States and China, most likely over Taiwan, should preoccupy the Biden team, beginning with the president," the authors conclude.

Oil is discovered in the East China Sea, and Taiwan's charismatic leader, David Chu-Yen, declares independence from mainland China in the face of Beijing's threat to invade. London journalist David Goldman, sent to cover the story, quickly finds that all is not as it first seems on the offshore island. Nuclear weapons pointing at China seem to have been hidden in the mountains by mysterious Asian secret societies. America's top general, ordered to stop the invasion, has his own secret agenda which stops nothing short of regime change in Beijing. For America's first lady president, this is the fast-track to Armageddon as she asks, "Just whose finger is on the nuclear button?"

Why and how America’s defense strategy must change in light of China’s power and ambition Elbridge A. Colby was the lead architect of the 2018 National Defense Strategy, the most significant revision of U.S. defense strategy in a generation. Here he lays out how America’s defense must change to address China’s growing power and ambition. Based firmly in the realist tradition but deeply engaged in current policy, this book offers a clear framework for what America’s goals in confronting China must be, how its military strategy must change, and how it must prioritize these goals over its lesser interests. The most informed and in-depth reappraisal of America’s defense strategy in decades, this book outlines a rigorous but practical approach, showing how the United States can prepare to win a war with China that we cannot afford to lose—precisely in order to deter that war from happening.

State-of-the-art action in the air, on land and at sea as the USA is drawn into conflict with China in this compelling and authentic new tale from an acclaimed master of the modern action-thriller. Dale Brownʹs spectacular new international bestseller -- packed with high-action entertainment, cutting-edge technology and breathtaking scenes of aerial combat -- looks forward to a near future where Taiwanʹs declaration of independence from mainland China brings a very real threat of major conflict to the Pacific. As China prepares its military response, the US president attempts to avert an international crisis by calling on his own tried and trusted secret strike force. But soon it becomes horribly apparent that with China and the USA moving ever closer to a nuclear showdown, it could be a mission too far for Patrick McLanahan, Brad Elliott, Jon Masters and their high-tech EB-52 Megafortress -- the 'Old Dog' itself.

This book is admittedly biased in support of liberty. Taiwan: The Threatened Democracy focuses on U.S. relations with Taiwan and the People's Republic of China from the Mao Tse-tung era through the Cold War to the current day, and projects the island's possible future. Taiwan has long been a flashpoint in the struggle between the communist and free world. Yet even as the possibility of armed conflict between China and Taiwan increases - a conflict with great implications for the United States - a domestic war has sprung up between the Bush White House and its support of Taiwan, and State Department staffers who lean heavily to the side of the People's Republic of China. Key to the conflict are those who care more about making profit in China than they care about maintaining liberty in Taiwan.
