Excerpt from Christian Socialism Dear Sir, I dedicate to you this little volume on Christian Socialism because you are the oldest surviving member of that movement in England, and one who has never ceased from the first to believe and to teach others to believe in the eternal principles of Truth, Hope, and Love in the pursuit of a higher social ideal. One of the original promoters of co-operation, itself the beloved offspring of Christian Socialism, its legal adviser in times when as yet it was unprotected by tho law, you have never since ceased to impress upon its members tho higher law of Christian love as a paramount force in society. While others have lost faith in their fellow-men and voluntary effort, you have continued, hoping against hope and with "munificent trustfulness" in principle, to advocate the cause of co-operative union on higher than commercial principles, to accentuate tho importance of the moral and religious factors in co-operative industry, and to aspire "after a union over widening into that all-embracing federation to which the social reformer looks forward." Excerpt from Christian Socialism, 1848-1854 College, and especially to Dr. R. H. Murray and Mr. G. T. Bennett, who have read the book in proof and whose criticisms upon it have been of the greatest assistance. My debt to the many writers from Whom I have quoted is apparent from the footnotes, and is particularly large in respect of the first chapter. Finally, I wish to express my deep gratitude to my colleagues at Emmanuel College Whose kindness in setting me free from the pressure of College business has enabled me. Excerpt from Charles Kingsley and Christian Socialism Kingsley was already known to Maurice. He had attended the meetings of bible scholars at Maurice 5 house in 1847, and they had corresponded extensively. To Maurice he went therefore to see what could be done to prevent a collision between troops and Chartists. Maurice was confined to the house with a severe cold, but he sent Kingsley to Ludlow with a letter of introduction. The two men set out for Kennington Common, where the Chartists were to assemble, but at Waterloo Bridge they heard of the ignominious dispersal. Of the demonstrators and returned to Maurice with the news. From this moment we may trace the inception of the Chris tian Socialist Movement. The band of men who were to lead the movement had already met-maurice, Hare, Ludlow, Mansfield, Scott, Parker, Hughes, Kingsley, and, later. On, E. Vansittart Neale. Excerpt from Christian Socialism and Its Opponents And I trust that those of us who have entered upon this undertaking, have done so, not although, but be cause they were lawyers. It may be that the practice of litigation has led them to long for some more har monious resolution of social difficulties; it may be that the study of technicalities made them seek after some application of a more simple, and, as it were, living law; or, again, that the penning of verbose Acts of Parliament, destined to remain a dead letter to the masses, made them feel the gulf that separates the statute-book from the nation that it nominally rules; or that a familiarity with the construction of commer cial partnerships and companies made them more and more aware of the total absence of legal facilities for the association of Labour. They found thus, in this movement, 0 work ready to their hand, for portions at least of which all previous experience seemed to have specially fitted them; and whatever may or may not be the ill-results, upon their present or future earnings, of the step they have taken, I believe they have no reason to repent of it. They are still labouring in their vocation, fulfilling their appointed duties, learning to frame, learning to apply, a most real and practical law. Excerpt from Murvale Eastman: Christian Socialist The past offers no parallel; it knew no similar conditions. The conflict between the many and the few has heretofore been one of personal right; the citizen has been evolved from the serf; the freeman from the slave. To this end all the forces of civilization have been shaped. The present is not a question of personal right, but of just opportunity. Wage-earning is not slavery, but when it becomes a fixed condition it is one of sheer dependence. The control of opportunity means the subjection of the individual just as much as did the control of his energies, but it does not trench upon the domain of personal right. No individual laborer has a right to demand work and wages of an individual employer. It is a question between society and the employer as to the control of opportunity. We have simply come upon a new era. The maxims of the past are no longer safe landmarks. The social bases of the past are too narrow for the demands of the present. The domain of personal duty has been enlarged. The relations of the individual have been extended. The area of mutual obligation has been amazingly increased. The citizen has become responsible for direction as well as allegiance. The function of government has been newly defined. Excerpt from Anti-Christian Socialism IN these democratic days, we are very interested in the widespread unrest of the masses, and a good deal is being written upon the subject just now. The following pages deal with but one aspect only of the subject - the prevalence of the atheistic element in Socialism. I do not wish to express any Opinion, in this book, either upon the merits or upon the demerits of the various economic, social, or political ideals of Socialism. I intend merely to speak of the prevalence of the atheistic element in Socialism. Further, I have no wish to imply that the ideals of Socialism tend necessarily towards atheism. I am merely concerned with the fact that very many Socialists are atheists, and that these maintain that Socialists, in order to be consistent, must be atheists and materialists.
