The small town of Hallstatt is a unique place of beauty and utility. It is on the shore of the Lake Hallstatt in Austria, ringed by the Dachstein mountains. In Hallstatt you find a wonderful tradition of hand carved Christmas Nativity scenes and figurines that will utterly please you. It used to be accessible only by boat and a small trail over the mountains. The first road was only built in 1890, using rock blasting. But Hallstatt has been active with salt mining since prehistoric times. A special Celtic culture lived here from 800 BC to 450 BC, the Hallstatt culture, which disappeared for unknown reasons. The salt mining continued in Roman times but was likely already then supplemented by exclusive tourism - Roman baths were found under the Janu sport shop, where there is a fantastic exhibition of Christmas Nativity scenes in the Advent period. In 1997 UNESCO declared the Hallstat-Dachstein/Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape a World heritage. There are abt 750 inhabitants on a whole year basis.

This became wildly popular all over the Christian world, but especially in Europe where it gets colder in the winter the further north you get. So there is a limit to this kind of performance. Naturally it then evolved with human size figures mainly out-doors and with smaller figurines you can have in-doors and which can be there for a longer period without nourishment or sleep. In this enchanting setting, extending for more than one kilometer along Lake Geneva's shoreline, you will find 170 stalls with crafts, tastings of local specialties, mulled wine and thousands of gift ideas. The size is as in a big German or Austrian city! Compared to other Christmas markets Montreux has more personal luxury items than traditional warm winter clothes. There does not appear to be an official Nativity as we have seen in the Catholic lands like Luxembourg, Austria and Bavaria. But also, the Nativity is not banned as in Strasbourg.
