In May 1998 he shot himself in front of the courthouse where a Christian had been sentenced to death for blasphemy, for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad. This book is an account of outcastes who sought hope through Christianity, but who now find themselves victims of a struggle to define Islam in Pakistan. It traces the origins and founding myths of the Pakistani Christians from the conversion of mostly untouchable sweepers, their consolidation as a community, and the growth of the Catholic Church in Pakistan to their trials during the Islamization programme of the 1980s and 1990s, including the dispute over the blasphemy laws that led to the Bishop's death. Walbridge examines a broad range of issues such as enculturation in the Pakistani Church, the rise of indigenous clergy, conflicts between the local churches and Rome, the role of caste and class, the mutual influence of Islam and Christianity, the rise of fundamentalist' Islam, the position of women in society and the church, and the ethical and practical dilemmas of development and human rights for an oppressed community. The book ends with a discussion of the ethical and political issues involved in the Bishop's protest suicide. Due to its low socio-economic and elemental religious background, it has always suffered from an image problem. Under the British Raj, the security and well-being of this community was assured to a very large degree. But with the establishment of Pakistan-a constitutionally Islamic state and society-the circumstances of this small minority have drastically changed. Less than two percent of the population, this minority is being constantly challenged on socio-economic and religious grounds. The Islamic elements in the land are ill-disposed toward it and, every now and then, resort to lawlessness towards members of this small minority. The author of this book has attempted to sharpen awareness of the problems of the Christian minority in Pakistan, and has proposed some steps that might alleviate these problems to a certain degree, including the development and practice of an Islam-reconciled Christianity. The thrust of his argument is that, when one is decidedly weak, and must remain so for the foreseeable future, it is best to acknowledge it and behave accordingly. One cannot safely dwell in the water while being on the wrong side of the crocodile.

However, the subsequent historical events led to a fast Islamization of nearly every part of public life and discrimination against the country's religious minorities, who today make up less than 4 per cent of the overall population. Based on extensive field work involving more than 100 non-structured qualitative interviews, this study explores the situation of the religious minorities and the dynamics of interfaith peacebuilding in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Primary focus was laid on the practice of interfaith dialogue, which - given the draconic blasphemy laws - differs from interfaith dialogue as conceived of in the West. Additionally, other peacebuilding measures, as offered by various non-governmental organizations, were taken into account, be they advocacy, promotion of human rights and unbiased education, or policy negotiation with the government. Heike Ruhland holds two master's degrees, one in Islamic Studies (University of Zurich) and one in International Information Management (University of Hildesheim). She attained her PhD from the Academy of World Religions, University of Hamburg.
