This book provides a new way of understanding Japanese management by focusing on the relationship between Japanese companies and their social practices. Whereas previous studies have often concentrated on the uniqueness of Japanese companies' systems (e.g., lifetime employment, the seniority system, company-specific unions) or methods (e.g., bottom-up management, Toyota production methods), this book explains the uniqueness of Japanese companies’ activities and practices. It especially highlights the day-to-day cleaning activities that many companies have practiced for numbers of years, regardless of their size or industry. Activities that continue beyond a certain period of time are called social practices, and the book clarifies how this particular social practice has historically been formed in Japanese companies and then shows what it means to keep cherishing those cleaning practices. This study consists of two parts: historical research and theoretical research. The historical research sheds light on the relationship between Japanese companies and cleaning activities from a historical point of view. On the basis of old literature and in-house documents, the reader can understand how Japanese companies have positioned cleaning practices in the process of increasing their growth potential and competitiveness and in maintaining their businesses. The second part explains theoretically the relationship between cleaning and management with quantitative and qualitative data from Japanese companies today. Using survey results from Japanese companies, the book shows what kinds of organizations will be formed and human resources will be developed if companies have been focusing for many years on 5S activities—Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain— that include cleaning. This part of the book presents the distinctive problem-solving and strategy-creation processes of Japanese companies in contrast to the activities of European and American companies.

The word cleaning covers a wide range of activities from good housekeeping and janitorial duties to clinical process cleaning applications that form part of our everyday lives, most people are not aware of their existence, and yet without them, many of the services and products we take for granted would not be available. Most chapters include case studies of various cleaning problems together with the solutions offered. Emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of designing, manufacturing and operating cleaning equipment, this includes a detailed examination of traditional cleaning methods, and considers a number of lessor known techniques that have been developed over recent years together with a glimpse of the future trends in the industry In addition to the actual cleaning techniques, the book examines the effect, of increasing international health, safety, training, and environmental legislation together with regulations that control cleaning standards in the pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food and drinks manufacturing industries. In this respect, the book is not intended to be a definitive reference book. Legislation and regulations are continually being upgraded, particularly those relating to European Directives. No apologies are given for the fact that the reader will be continually reminded of the need to obtain up to date copies of the various documents referred to, and to secure expert advice on those issues that are crucial in terms of health, safety and hazardous conditions. To assist the reader, useful information sources are listed in the reference section following each chapter. jkljk

Welcome to "Breathing Clean: A Journey into Indoor Air Quality." In the modern era, we spend a significant portion of our lives indoors, whether it's at home, work, or in various public spaces. It is within these indoor environments that we expect safety, comfort, and well-being. However, there is an invisible factor that profoundly impacts our lives—indoor air quality (IAQ). This book sets out on a compelling exploration of IAQ, delving into the intricacies of what constitutes clean and healthy air within our indoor spaces. It aims to empower readers with knowledge, insights, and practical solutions to enhance their understanding and take meaningful action to improve the air they breathe. Throughout these pages, we will unravel the mysteries surrounding IAQ, dissecting the sources, pollutants, and potential health effects that can arise from poor air quality. We will explore the science behind IAQ, helping you comprehend the complex interplay between indoor environments and the air we inhale. With a keen focus on education, we will navigate the different aspects of IAQ assessment, providing guidance on how to identify potential risks and understand measurement techniques. We will shed light on the significance of monitoring and how it can shape our decisions and actions to ensure the air we breathe is healthy and safe. While exploring the book, you will encounter various chapters dedicated to the common indoor pollutants that plague our indoor spaces. We will uncover the secrets behind volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter, mold, radon, and other pollutants that can silently compromise our health and well-being. Moreover, we will examine their sources and equip you with the tools to mitigate and control them. Our journey will continue by focusing on the strategies and technologies available to improve IAQ. From effective ventilation systems to advanced air filtration and purification methods, we will explore a myriad of solutions that can transform the quality of the air we breathe. We will delve into design considerations, sustainability practices, and regulations that shape the IAQ landscape. As we progress through the book, we will highlight the importance of awareness and education in cultivating a culture of healthy indoor environments. We will emphasize the role each individual can play in advocating for clean air and fostering positive change. This book is a call to action, urging you to be proactive in safeguarding your health and the well-being of those around you. It is an invitation to embark on a journey that unveils the importance of breathing clean air and empowers you to take control of your indoor environment. Together, let us embrace the mission of breathing clean, cultivating indoor spaces that prioritize health, and advocating for improved IAQ on a global scale. By the end of this book, it is our hope that you will be armed with the knowledge, motivation, and determination to champion the cause of indoor air quality for a healthier future.
