From its '80s golden age, or the dominance it enjoyed throughout the '90s and '00s, right up to the present day, the West Coast Offense has consistently been one of the most successful offensive schemes in football. Whether it was Joe Montana showcasing Walsh's invention as the revolutionary approach to football that it was in the '80s, or the success of Mike Holmgren and Brett Favre in the '90s, or modern quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes, the West Coast Offense has shown, season after season, that it can be retooled to face the challenges of the modern game and still deliver success and Superbowl wins! In Statistical History of the West Coast Offense, author Terry Matthews takes you on a guide of the West Coast's history, revealing the best teams, players and coaches who operated in the system, reliving some of the great games when the West Coast faced up against not just some of the great defenses - like the '46' Defense of Buddy Ryan - but also how things played out when West Coast teams and some of the finest minds to coach the scheme, would contest the greatest prize in pro football.

When football coach Tiger Ellison was faced with his first losing season ever, he had to muster all the creative will he had acquired since childhood to turn the season around. In doing so, he invented the most wide-open, productive, fan-pleasing scheme of aerial football the game had ever seen! He shared his philosophy with the coaching world in 1965, by writing a book called Run and Shoot Football: Offense of the Future. His dramatic offense changed the way football has been played ever since, all the way from the Little Leagues to the NFL. But this story transcends football, taking place during the social turbulence of the 20th Century. As educator and coach, Tiger dedicated his life to tapping into the fighting spirit of each of his youngsters, regardless of race, creed, or social status. He challenged each to build the character, confidence and courage to pursue a noble cause, in the classroom, on the gridiron of American football, and in life. It is a poignant reminder of the power each of us has within us to become a real winner. Tiger Ellison had a passion for life, country and sport that were absolutely contagious for those around him. When you read his story, you may laugh a little, you may learn some things about football strategy, but I am certain you will love Tiger as we players did and see why his positive philosophy of life influenced all of us in a very special way. Dr. Rex Kern, President, MSB Financial, United Midwest Savings Bank; 1968 Buckeye National Championship Quarterback and 1969 Rose Bowl MVP; Member of The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame This is one football story that is not about power and money, rather a powerful and creative mind that left its imprint forever on players, coaches, and modern offensive football. At a time when football has become big business, Tigers philosophy will remind us all why we love the game, what we can learn from it, and who we can become by it. Earle Bruce, Former Head Football Coach, The Ohio State University A real masterpiece! Every teacher, coach and mothers son should have and use this material. During the past few decades, dating back to the 1970s, success on the offensive side of the football has been predicated on a handful of fundamental and foundational concepts. As the years have passed, more emphasis and weight has been placed on the passing game through a variety of advanced strategies. The past 30 to 40 years have been witness to an array of innovative offensive methodologies affording the world of football a diverse spectrum of approaches comprised of various brands, styles, and trademarks when discussing football offense. Throughout the 1970s we saw the universal implementation of traditional option and veer offenses, all leveraging powerful ground attacks with the passing game acting in a supporting, ancillary role. In the 1980s, the Pro-I offense was used on a widespread basis while the west-coast offense was introduced with tremendous efficacy and popularity. By the end of the decade, numerous one-back systems were implemented at all levels of football. As the decade of the 1990s opened, the run-and-shoot offense surfaced, producing some of the most prolific quarterbacks, backs, and receivers in the history of the game. And, in the past 15-20 years, shovel-pass, zone-read, and hurry-up systems of offensive football have become ubiquitous standards throughout all tiers of the game. Whatever style of offense coaches and teams utilize and implement, a handful of key building blocks remain the foundational base for any successful football program. Further, a core nucleus of underlying concepts underpin the ability of a coaching staff when designing, teaching, implementing, and assessing today's complex and sophisticated offensive structures. These building blocks and concepts have remained consistent throughout the decades, from three-back power sets to spread formations, from triple-option schemes of the 1970s to contemporary zone-read schemes, and from ball-control west-coast offense systems to today's no-huddle hurry-up brand. No matter the official brand, title, style, or type of offensive system implemented, success on the offensive side of the ball manifests through a rigid football paradigm involving a tightly defined ideology of gridiron concepts and structures.
