Excerpt from Colonial Days These papers I saved at the time, and, hav ing now revised, rewritten and rearranged them and added some new material as well, I have had the presumption to believe they may, in the form here submitted, gratify sentiment among surviving Colonists and curiosity among the newer population Of Greeley; not because I wrote of the scenes here faithfully described, but because others lived them in the long, long ago. Excerpt from Colonial Days: A Historical Reader The large place given to history during the last fifteen years, in both the elementary and the high school, is significant. It indicates a fuller realization of the importance of this branch of study in developing the social instincts. Through the study of history the narrow contact of every-day life is supplemented by a knowledge of the struggles and achievements of all humanity. The pupil shares and profits by the experience of the race; and by making the racial life his own, he gains social insight and social disposition, which prepare him to render his highest service to the community. In the lower grades of the elementary school most of the work in history should be in the form of oral language lessons, and the subject-matter should be presented in story form. The concrete, the personal, and the dramatic, appealing in a special way to children, should be made prominent; for through this avenue alone can the teacher reach the imaginative and the emotional life of the child. But as early as the fourth grade reading should supplement the oral work. With this idea in view the present volume, the second of a series, has been prepared. The title gives some indication of its scope and purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Colonial Days in Old New York This book should perhaps have been "intituled" Colonial Days in New Netherland, for much of the life described herein was in the days of Dutch rule. But it was New Netherland for scarce half a century, and the name is half-forgotten, though it remained, both in outer life and in heart, a Dutch colonie, even when the province was New York and an English governor had control. In New Netherland, as in every place where the Dutch plant a colony, as in South Africa to-day, Dutch ways, Dutch notions, the Dutch tongue lingered long. To this day, Dutch influence and Dutch traits, as well as Dutch names, are ever present and are a force in New York Life.
