Excerpt from Commerce and the Empire 1914 and After IT may be asked why is this book published in war-time I reply that the question is a very natural one, and that whilst so many of the cream of our young manhood, together with the hopes and dreams and happiness of tens of millions, are being swept down the ghastly stream of a veritable Niagara of blood, and whilst civilization and freedom gasp for breath, questions affecting buying and selling might well have been put aside - as they were-and kept aside - as they have not been. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Commerce and Industry: A Historical Review of the Economic Conditions of the British Empire From the Peace of Paris in 1815 to the Declaration of War in 1914, Based on Parliamentary Debates Seven Years' War which ended in 1763. We had largely increased our possessions in America and had established ourselves in India. In Europe all our potential commercial rivals were fully occupied with their internal and external troubles. Thus a golden Opportunity occurred of supplying the markets of the world with our manufactures and the produce of our colonies and dependencies. Notwithstanding the attempt of Buona parte to destroy our commerce during the Napoleonic wars, our maritime supremacy enabled us to maintain our commercial position, and after the battle of Trafalgar in 1805 we had command of every sea and control of the commerce of the world. Excerpt from A History of Commerce The year 1914 marks one of the great turning points in history. I have accordingly revised the part of this book covering the recent period to close the narrative at that date, and have added another part, covering the history of commerce in the war and in the two or three years of peace immediately following. The commerce of the great nations of the world has departed since 1914 far from its accustomed paths and forms. In my attempt to make intelligible the commercial changes of the time I have had to take account of matters in public finance, currency and foreign exchange which are usually treated apart from the history of international trade. I have thought it better, by touching on these outside subjects, to show the reasons for the course which commerce has followed, rather than to omit the reasons because they are hard for the student of the history of commerce to understand. Excerpt from Commerce and the Empire The necessity of dealing with the preferential phase of the subject has caused me to hurry the publishing, and consequently the book is less complete in many respects than I intended. The controversy with regard to preferential duties will have one good result it will lead to a better general knowledge of the whole subject, and will, therefore, pave the way for the self-governing Colonies, one after another, to raise the Free Trade flag. A British Free Trade Empire is a noble object for which to fight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is the story of Germany's commerce raiders of World War I, the surface ships that were supposed to starve the British Isles of the vast cargoes of vital resources being shipped from the furthest reaches of the Empire. To that end pre-war German naval strategists allocated a number of cruisers and armed, fast ocean liners, as well as a complex and globe-spanning supply network to support them – known as the Etappe network. This book, drawing on technical illustrations and the author's exhaustive research, explains the often overlooked role that the commerce raiders played in World War I. Whilst exploring the design and development of the ships, it also describes their operational history, how they tied up a disproportionate amount of the British fleet on lengthy pursuits, and how certain raiders such as the SMS Emden were able to wreak havoc across the oceans.
