Academic Communication Skills is designed to assist international graduate students as they create their own opportunities to expand their linguistic and strategic repertoires in academic English conversations. The needs of international graduate students are often different than those of others who have learned English as an additional language because they participate in academic conversations at advanced levels, encounter daily opportunities to discuss topics about which they have sophisticated knowledge, and are required to share their expertise with others (in their roles as teaching assistants or research assistants). As students progress in their academic studies, they increasingly understand that their fluency in academic oral communications plays an important role in their academic performance and future career options. While they recognize the importance, many voice frustrations, finding that speaking English is more difficult than writing and engaging in impromptu dialogues is more difficult than presenting prepared monologues. This book is an excellent resource for either classroom instruction or for self-study. It provides effective confidence-building strategies that speakers can try when participating in a range of different academic interactions. By guiding both students and instructors in examining common conversational challenges in academic environments, including many of the assumptions that frequently cause miscommunication, the book provides proven strategies for increased effectiveness and confidence in cross-cultural academic conversations.

Registering for courses, securing financial aid, developing strong study skills, and mastering difficult course material are just a few of the wide variety of obstacles that college students must overcome on their path to graduation. Beyond inadequate academic preparation, first-generation college students may not be able to rely on family or friends for advice about higher education and thus face the additional burden of constructing a support network of mentors and advisors. Without suitable advice and counseling, these students may make decisions that adversely affect their circumstances—and thus, their education. Academic Language and Learning Support Services in Higher Education is an essential scholarly resource that examines the quality, organization, and administration of academic advisement and academic support systems for college and university students that connect them to the academic community and foster an appreciation of lifelong learning. Featuring a wide range of topics such as enrollment services, professional developments, and service learning, this text is ideal for academicians, academic advisers, mentors, curriculum designers, counsellors, administrators, higher education faculty, policymakers, researchers, and graduate students.

This research digest provides an overview of perspectives on communication skills for international students with English as an additional language (EAL). In addition, it proposes that the narrative surrounding this issue be shifted towards a focus on communication skills for all students in higher education. Initially, this analysis takes into account recurring public perceptions played out in the media where the English language competencies of EAL international students are presented as evidence of declining standards for communication skills in higher education more broadly. As higher education institutions increase their efforts to address the diverse range of communication skills of their students, the discourses that have dominated the distinctions between EAL international students and domestic students require re-framing. The times have changed and the discussion needs to move to more practical ideas which can address the complexities that often surround this issue. As such, this research digest suggests that a focus on developing and assessing the communication skills of all students will shift the institutional and external perceptions of the English language âproblemâ of EAL international students. This would enable a shift towards a broader agenda for the explicit development and assessment of communication skills as core business for higher education institutions, linked to educational success and enhancing graduate employability. In this paper the authors have used the term âcommunication skillsâ to refer to all aspects of communication including English Language Proficiency (ELP). [Author abstract]
