INTRODUCTION There comes a time when the elastic snaps. When you push yourself to breaking point, and everything crashes down. My breaking point came on a gloomy Monday morning commute in 2015. Sitting in my car, waiting for the lights to change, I looked at two guys in their cars on either side of me. They looked as miserable as I felt. At that moment, I burst into tears. “What the fuck was I doing with my life?” I was unhappy in my personal life and hated my job. I couldn’t see a way out. I was too invested in my career; too old to start again. Looking back, I didn’t know jack shit about building a fitness business. Corporate marketing is one thing. Doing everything from scratch alone in a different industry is another. I didn’t have a creative agency or a multimillion-pound budget. All I had was a Personal Trainer certificate and the ironparadisefitness.com domain name. Nevertheless, I started building my online empire. Or, as I now refer to it, pissing in the wind for two years. I would write lousy articles, post selfies, and wonder why clients weren’t beating down my virtual door. Desperate to carve a way out of corporate life, I vowed not to quit. My business was my obsession. Going out, meeting friends, and taking a break were a rarity. I thought it was the only way to be successful. I became a hermit. A recluse. Like the creepy guy kids fear in horror movies. “That’s Old Man Mitchell from No. 29. He never leaves the house.” “Some say he only goes outside to dispose of the dead bodies.” I wasn’t that bad, but my social life went on ice. I studied nutrition and learned the intricacies of exercise mechanics. I read books and invested in courses on social media, copywriting, and web design. Iron Paradise Fitness had consumed my entire life, and I loved it. It was the fire in my belly I’d been missing. The passion I needed. Although, it did make for awkward conversations on Tinder dates. “What do you like to do in your spare time?” The innocent question would come. “Well, I’m building my own business right now, so that’s my main focus.” “Ah, cool. But what do you like to do for fun?” “Work on my business.” “Yeah, but what about when you’re not doing that?” “I’m either working on my business, thinking about working on my business, or eating.” “Oh!…”

One of the most tangible aftershocks of Punk was its urgency to prompt individuals into action. Document your reality: do it yourself. From this, a generation of young men were inspired and, with often zero financial planning or business sense, in a bedroom, garage or shed, labels such as Factory, Rough Trade, Mute, 4AD, Beggars Banquet, Warp, Domino and Creation began, shifting the musical landscape and trading on an ethos and identity no brand consultant would now dare dream of. Musicians were encouraged to do whatever the hell they wanted and damn the consequences. From humble beginnings, some of our most influential artists were allowed to thrive: New Order, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Orange Juice, Cocteau Twins, Sonic Youth, Happy Mondays, Primal Scream, Aphex Twin, Teenage Fanclub, My Bloody Valentine, Autechre, Broadcast, Vampire Weekend, The White Stripes and Artic Monkeys to name but a handful. This is the story, set to an incredible soundtrack, of the enormous scale of the passions, the size of the egos, and the true extent of the madness of the mavericks who had the vision and bloody-mindedness to make the musical landscape exciting again.

In Never Content, author Harry Bruce works from confidential corporate documents and candid interviews - in what is now hailed as 'Canada's insurance-consolidation sweepstakes' - to unravel and uncover the values, personalities and maneuvers that took Maritime Life from stalwart survivor to surprise victor in a takeover game in which only the strong survive. Never Content is the captivating tale of a financial-services company whose incredible success is borne out of dissatisfaction with the status quo and an original approach that never fails to surprise Bay Street. Originally conceived as a homegrown alternative to the out-of-province operators who dominated the business, Maritime Life has been a constant contrarian. It was the first to computerize its accounting system, replace career sales agents in favour of independent agents and provide the armed services with group insurance. It has been an industry leader in product innovation. The story of Maritime Life has produced a unique corporate culture, over two thousand employees, more than $14 billion in assets under administration and one of the top life insurance companies in Canada. Veteran reporter and social commentator Harry Bruce delivers a powerful business story set against a vast sweep of history-a riveting and inspiring tale of acquisition and advantage with telling lessons for any student of business strategy.

With its massive faces, punishing rocks, and treacherous currents, Maverick's presents a surfing challenge like no other. Author Matt Warshaw has updated his critically acclaimed illustrated history of Maverick's to cover important recent developments, and we've added a fresh new cover to kick this edition off in style. "A fascinating account," to quote Surfer magazine, it takes "a cue from Sebastian Junger's The Perfect Storm...Warshaw focused on a single event...and expands on it to illuminate an entire culture and its world beyond waves." The event was the death of celebrated surfer Mark Foo, one of those who congregate every winter to test themselves in the dark, foreboding waters. And what unfolds in Maverick's is no less than the story of big-wave surfing, from its ancient Hawaiian origins to modern tow-in riders. It's a book to be enjoyed not only by those who surf deep in the waves, but also by those whose taste for adventure is satisfied deep in the pages of a very good book.
