The American English Coonhound, also known simply as the 'Redtick Coonhound' or the 'English Coonhound, ' is a breed of coonhound that is typically bred in the Southern United States. The breed is a descendant of the hunting hounds brought to America by the settlers during the 17th and 18th centuries. Unlike other breeds of coonhounds, a variety of coat colorations are accepted to meet the American English Coonhound breed standards. The Bluetick Coonhound was originally registered as a variant of the English Foxhound and was only recognized as an individual breed in late 1940s. The Bluetick Coonhound gets its 'blue' coloring from black ticking on a white background, which gives the illusion of a navy blue coloration. The breed has a moderate length and glossy coat that will have the unique 'blue' in sporadic patches across its coat.
