If you live Simply in the letter, even Of the Bible, and not in the Spirit, you have missed the whole lesson. If you try to be good outwardly, and do not realize the consciousness within you, you are grop ing in the darkness Of sense belief. Then how are we to study? Whether teacher or student, the attitude Of thought Should be the same - that Of receptivity through earnest, sincere desire to know Truth. W'e should not care whether that upsets our former opinions and beliefs or not. Are we that Sincere, or would we rather have our Old way? You find' peo ple occasionally who say they do not know and do -not care to know anything different from their long-accustomed opinions. But to be a real student Of Truth you must be willing to lay down all former opinions. The fact is you are both student and teacher. Every good thought, every act, is not only unfolding yourself, but is an uplifting and inspiring influence to others.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Knowledge of God and Other Sermons "This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent." St. John xvii. 3. So spake the Master we follow in His great prayer the night before He died on the Cross; and the Church has taken His words into one of her daily collects, speaking of God, "in knowledge of whom" (that is, of course, "in the knowing of whom") "standeth our eternal life"; as well as into the Collect for St. Philip and St. James's Day - "whom truly to know is everlasting life." But men say, 'We cannot know God: we do not deny the existence of God; but we affirm that, if there be a God, He is unknowable.' Now let me at once allow that there is a great truth underlying this agnosticism. There generally is a truth at the root of all error; for error is mostly partial or one-sided truth, erring in its ignoring of other truth. It is true, then, that a finite being like man cannot know, with any complete or commensurate knowledge, an infinite Being like God. Excerpt from The Divine Power Exerted in a Sinner's Regeneration: Two Discourses It is admitted, on all hands, that Regeneration is one of those things which pertain to life and godliness. There can be neither where it is wanting It is admitted, also, that Regeneration is the result of the di vine power. Yet the text declares that the divine power which gives us all things, &c. - which produces Regeneration, is exerted through our knowledge of God. To deny this, is to deny the plain words of the Bible. Now knowledge, in its very nature, means an exercise of the human mind in discovering, observing, and being convinced of truth or matters of fact. He that attributes any other idea to the word, violates the established use of language. There is, then, and can be, no know ledge among men, independent and irrespective of the exercise of their own minds relative to truth or matters of fact. The doctrine therefore taught in the text is, that the divine power which conveys to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, is exerted through or by means of the truth, as it secures the knowledge of God. We select one item from the grand total, and shall consider the doc trine more especially in application to it - that is, the Regeneration of the sinner or his being born again. This is the result of the divine power; but the divine power exerted in producing it, is through our knowledge of God, or, m other words, through the truth as apprehend ed by our minds. The doctrine, then, to which we invite your atten tion is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
