Within the larger context of East Asia, the study has navigated the religio-cultural dimensions of Vietnamese spirituality that have hindered the Christian faith being assimilated into the Vietnamese spirituality. The failure of the Christian missionaries to identify the simultaneous "resisting" and "assimilating" forces characteristic of Vietnamese spirituality became the reason why Christian contextualization efforts failed. At the same time, however, it seems promising that contextualization efforts could be possible once the dual force nature of Vietnamese spirituality is recognized, that is, identifying what needs to be resisted and what are the crucial religio-cultural elements or concepts that need to be assimilated. This nature would serve as the lens through which the contextualization processes would review the essential elements of Vietnamese spirituality which can be redeemed for evangelical Christian beliefs and practices, for instance, the concept of God the Dao (the Way) and the Vietnamese extended family perspective for both the Trinitarian relationship and the Vietnamese Christian community of both the living people and the ancestors. A Vietnamese mission theology must begin with the Vietnamese concept of God the Dao. Acknowledging that the Dao is Christ, the Incarnate God, is the key to unlocking the problem of believing in a God who is alien and strange to the Vietnamese. Any attempt at Christian contextualization in Vietnam, therefore, cannot overlook the dual forces of "resisting and assimilating," and the nature of the Dao of Vietnamese spirituality.

On the way toward a Vietnamese theology in general and a theology of Christian education in Vietnam in particular, this study discusses the dynamic relation between the Gospel and culture which is metaphorized by the bamboo cross. From this point, it is suggested that inculturation of the Gospel and transformation of the culture are the fundamental concepts for a theology of culture. This discussion reveals how elements of the Vietnamese cultural heritage (such as traditions, customs, legends, folk tales, folk songs, stories, lullabies, festivities, beliefs, and religious concepts) can further an understanding of the Christian faith, and how these cultural aspects can be used as resources for theology. At the same time, negative aspects of the culture still exist within the Church and society, and need to be overcome and transformed to become appropriate to the authentic message of the Gospel. With the intention to discuss a Vietnamese theology from which is drawn an application to Christian educational ministry, this project offers an approach to theology which takes seriously its contextualization, its integration with the culture, and its task of transformation of the culture. Engagement and dialogue is considered as methodology for a Vietnamese theology in general and Christian education in Vietnam in particular. Finally, this project proposes a model of continuity and change as a dynamic relation for application in the Church, entailed by some practical suggestions, in the hope that the Gospel becomes really relevant and meaningful to Vietnamese people in their cultural context.

The researcher is concerned with maturing in inner freedom as the challenge to human beings especially to religious persons. The dissertation is inspired by the Church's invitation to religious to return to their original inspiration and to renew their formation programs. This same challenge is found in the 1990 Constitution and Directory of LHC, Vietnam. Thus, the researcher proposes to enrich the IFP of the LHC, Vietnam by setting up a dialogue between the understanding of inner freedom in the Judeo-Christian Tradition and the five cultural virtues of Vietnamese women. The enriched IFP Vietnam focuses on a spirituality grounded in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, lived within the context of Vietnamese culture. It is above all a spirituality of radical freedom. The Society of Vietnam, since the renovation policy after the Communist Revolution in 1975, is going through profound changes: culturally, morally, socially and economically. These changes are a challenge to rethink the attitudes and behavior of the LHC sisters. They have to be open to the outside world that must be addressed by a new evangelization rooted in their own culture and in a thorough understanding of Judeo-Christian tradition. A specifi fully developed IFP training is an indispensable prerequisite for carrying out their commitment in the mission of the Vietnamese Catholic Church. In the process of doing contextual theology, we employed the pedagogical method known as SEE-DISCERN-ACT. In the first step, SEEING, we enter into conversations with some Vietnamese religious men and women and some members of the LHC, Vietnam regarding the situation of Vietnam from the perspective of freedom. This study confirms the need to enrich the IFP of LHC, Vietnam from that perspective. In the second step, DISCERNING, we study the Christian understanding of inner freedom, by giving a short survey of this theme in the Old Testament, in the ministry of Jesus, and the Pauline theology. This is followed by a study of some Church Fathers, theologians, and reflections of the Magisterium. This vision on inner freedom enters then into dialogue with the five culturla virtues of women, namely: anh hung ("heroism"), bat khuat ("courage, bravery"), trung hau ("fidelity, faithfulness"), dam dang ("responsibility"), and quen minh ("self-giving") and LHC IFP. These virtues, enriched by our Christian vision of inner freedom, can enrich our IFP, Vietnam. We add an excursus on some psychological insights that cannot be overlooked in a reflection on a formation program. In the third step, ACTING, we study how the IFP, Vietnam, enriched by the dialogue between the Judeo-Christian Tradition and the Vietnamese values, can be a challenge for the LHC sisters to establish a more meaningful lived encounter between their charism, mission and spirituality on the one hand, and the socio-cultural and political context of Vietnam on the other. The renewed program of formation, focusing on inner freedom within the context of their cultural values, may help them in their dying and rising with Jesus crucified, who is at the heart of their charism.
