Shortly after the establishment of the Brown Boveri Research Center in 1967, plans were developed to organize a series of Brown Boveri Scientific Symposia, each hav ing a different topic, to be held every other year in Baden. We choose the subject for a symposium with the following requirements in mind: It should characterize a part of a scientific discipline; in other words it should concern an area of scholarly study and research. It should be of current interest in the sense that important results have recent ly been obtained and considerable research is under \\dY in the world's scientific community. It should bear some relation to the scientific and technological activity of the Company. These symposia are intimately related to one of the very basic concepts which have governed the work of many modern manufacturing companies: close coupling be tween science and engineering. It is to this coupling that we owe the technical stan dard of our products, and it is this coupling which we hope to be furthered by our symposia.

Here-in one current, comprehensive source-is a wealth of both theoretical and practicalinformation on circuit interruption. Twenty-two authorities at the leading edge of researchand development provide a solid grasp of circuit breaker design and performance... and that's knowledge you can put to work immediately!arcuit Interruption surpasses other books in completeness and currency-includingcoverage of the sulfur hexafluoride puffer, the vacuum breaker, and the low-voltagemolded-case breakers, that are taking the place of many older types. In addition to thelatest theories and techniques, this major volume examines promising future trends.More than 400 clear illustrations help make the text easy to follow, and over 620 keyreferences point the way to the best places for continuing study.Today, the field of circuit interruption is so diverse that a thorough single source reallystands out. arcuit Interruption is that- source, the perfect reference for electrical, electronic, power, and design engineers; and researchers investigating circuit breaker design, interaction of breakers and power circuits, power transmission, power distribution, circuit interruption, electric contacts, and gaseous conduction. Moreover, this exceptionalbook serves as an excellent source for practicing power engineers as well as an invaluablesupplement to graduate-level engineering courses in circuit interruption, transmission, and distribution of power . . . and a supplement in professional seminars and society/association courses.

Provides an original, detailed, and practical description of current interruption transients, origins, and the circuits involved, and shows how they can be calculated Based on a course that has been presented by the author worldwide, this book teaches readers all about interruption transients calculation—showing how they can be calculated using only a hand calculator and Excel. It covers all the current interruption cases that occur on a power system and relates oscillatory circuit (transients) and symmetrical component theory to the practical calculation of current interruption transients as applied to circuit breaker application. The book explains all cases first in theory, and then illustrates them with practical examples. Topics featured in Current Interruption Transients Calculation, Second Edition include: RLC Circuits; Pole Factor Calculation; Terminal Faults; Short Line Faults; Inductive Load Switching; and Capacitive Load Switching. The book also features numerous appendices that cover: Differential Equations; Principle of Duality; Useful Formulae; Euler’s Formula; Asymmetrical Current-Calculating Areas Under Curves; Shunt Reactor Switching; and Generator Circuit Breaker TRVs. Offers a clear explanation of how to calculate transients without the use of specialist software, showing how four basic circuits can represent all transients Describes every possible current interruption case that can arise on a power system, explaining them through theory and practical examples Analyses oscillatory circuit (transients) and symmetrical component theory in detail Takes a practical approach to the subject so engineers can use the knowledge in circuit breaker applications Current Interruption Transients Calculation, Second Edition is an ideal book for power electrical engineers, as well as transmission and distribution staff in the areas of planning and system studies, switchgear application, specification and testing, and commissioning and system operation.
