In this, the ultimate history of the bicycle, David Herlihy recounts the saga of this far-reaching invention and the passions it aroused. The pioneer racer insisted the bicycle would become "as common as umbrellas." Mark Twain was more skeptical, enjoining his reader to "get a bicycle. You will not regret it-if you live." Herlihy shows readers why the bicycle captured the public's imagination and the myriad ways in which it reshaped the world.

Since the early 1980s, renowned musician and visual artist David Byrne has been riding a bike as his principal means of transportation in New York City. Two decades ago, he discovered folding bikes and started taking them with him when traveling around the world. Byrne's choice was initially made out of convenience rather than political motivation, but the more cities he saw from his bicycle, the more he became hooked on this mode of transport and the sense of liberation, exhilaration, and connection it provided. This point of view, from his bike seat, became his panoramic window on urban life, a magical way of opening one's eyes to the inner workings and rhythms of a city's geography and population. Bicycle Diaries chronicles Byrne's observations and insights--what he is seeing, whom he is meeting, what he is thinking about--as he pedals through and engages with some of the world's major cities.--Publisher.

Sequel to the hilarious I Will Stand in my House Forever, Chris Gooderham returns from his intrepid journey desperately craving more. Will you please slow down? is the comedy sequel, where Gooderham finds himself a new cycling partner; Endurance Bunny. A man who is physically fit, primed to perfection, who runs a marathon before breakfast and chops down trees with his bare hands. But Gooderham doesn't cope well with being the unfit one, especially when he's forced to watch his superhuman colleague make everything look so easy. Will you please slow down? is the real story behind the fictional Endurance Bunny and the small shrivelled organ. Much of the text is similar to the original, but is written purely as a diary of the cycle tour for the purest amongst you. Will you please slow down? is a must read for anyone who has already cycled, or is contemplating a cycle challenge and includes daily maps, road and traffic conditions as well as the contour of the route.

One of the first true freedoms you experience as a kid growing up is your first bike. It becomes your transportation to explore the world... or at least the local neighborhood! All the kids in my neighborhood had bikes, and we roamed like packs of unwashed hooligans with torn jeans and bloody knees. We stuffed playing cards in our spokes and chewed on black licorice sticks as we rode around looking for the next jumping contest to break out. It was magic! But to a kid, a bike is more than transportation, it becomes an extension of your personality. Everybody's bike was as unique as the person who rode them. Stingrays, 10 speeds, mountain bikes, BMX, cruisers... everybody had something a little different, and they all had their strengths and weaknesses. This is where the idea for the PURPLE BICYCLE came from. Just as a bike might wish it had the abilities of a different make or model, so might a person tend to overlook how truly unique God has created each one us and long for someone else's gifts and talents, color, or ethnicity because they seem better than ours. It's a simple story, but one we all need to be reminded of from time to time.
