Deep Crustal Seismic Reflection Profiling: Australia 1978–2015 presents the full suite of reflection profiles penetrating the whole crust carried in Australia by Geoscience Australia and various partners. The set of reflection data comprises over 16,000 km of coverage across the whole continent, and provides an insight into the variations in crustal architecture in the varied geological domains. Each reflection profile is presented at approximately true scale with up to 220 km of profile per page and overlap between pages. Each reflection section is accompanied by a geological strip map showing the configuration of the line superimposed on 1:1M geology. The compilation includes a suite of large-scale reflection transects groups of 1,000 km or more that link across major geological provinces, and an extensive bibliography of reports and relevant publications.

Preserving the relative true-amplitude of seismic traces provides significant advantages for deep crustal investigations, particularly for the identification and analysis of deep reflections originating near the crust-mantle boundary. Preserving lateraI variations along deep reflections is also important for resolving amplitude changes due to geologic causes rather than to artifacts from recording or source conditions. Three relative true-amplitude processing methods (automatic edit, single-trace equalization, and a common-depth-point gather equalization) were applied to the 20-second seismic data of the Great lakes Multidisciplinary Program on Crustal Evolution in order to evaluate the performance of the different techniques. Particular attention was paid to the improvement of signal-to-noise ratio and to the preservation of latera I continuity of the deep reflections. This study indicates that the automatic editing procedure based on the median amplitude of a common-depth-point gather provided substantial signal-to-noise ratio improvement of the seismic profiles. Post-stack amplitude balancing was commonly necessary to maintain the lateral continuity of the deep reflections and to reduce migration noise. The results from these processing strategies confirm the existence of large differences in crustal reflectivities and in the shape and geometry of crust-mantle transition beneath central and western lake Superior.

DEKORP, the German continental reflection seismic program, was the major focus of deep seismic research in Germany in the 1980s and 1990s. The seismic sections provided fundamental new insight into deep geological structure of the European continent and the dynamics of continental formation. They formed the basis for worldwide comparative studies of orogenic structure. The complicated signature of the reflections from the deep crust indicated that new processing and interpretation techniques must be considered to better image the crystalline crust. Results of these efforts, including pre-stack migration, 3-D imaging, shear waves and seismic anisotropy, are presented in this special volume. In part, the articles open the perspective to new and future research. In part, they document research activity triggered by technical and interpretational questions raised by DEKORP field work and profiling results. Many of the presented methods can find immediate application in industrial seismic prospecting.
