Excerpt from History of Maryland The editor of the work which it is the purpose of these brief preliminary words. To present to the public for its sufferance and, it is hoped, a measure of satisfaction, has held in mind during his labors certain facts which he conceived to be fundamental in his undertaking. Conformity of style and literary usage was regarded as important. Following the line of least resistance, he undertook to adapt the style of Mr. Mcsherry to that of his own rather than to affect a manner of writing which to him would have been forced and unnatural, and certainly to the reader clumsy and unrewarding. Numerous verbal changes have therefore been made throughout the text. A certain fulsomeness which appears especially in the eulogies in the work has been corrected. These and similar literary changes embrace the greater part of the exercise of the editorial function up to the chapter which relates to the close of the Revolutionary War. From that period to the end of the work the story was too meager to have linked to it the great subsequent events of Maryland's history. It thus became necessary to rewrite the work from that point, although in so doing everything of the author's has found incorporation, although not always in situ. A comparison with the original work will show the large extent of the amplification which was found to be necessary. Excerpt from Descriptions of Maryland From the time when Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon sailed to America and entered the Chesapeake Bay, many travellers have entered the territory now embraced in the State of Maryland and have written accounts of what they found there. Other descriptions of the State or of parts of it have been written to serve as guide - books to strangers. Still other descriptions, more or less imaginary in character, are found in the pages of works of fiction. It seemed a task worthy of performance to gather together the references to the State found in works in the classes above named and to prepare a chronological bibliography of the descriptions of Maryland. No claim for completeness is made for the list of books; but, at the least, it forms a good working basis for the student. To several classes of investigators the list should prove of use: the man interested in the State's history, the chronicler of local conditions, the student of the manners and customs of the people at any given epoch, and the biographer who may find references to the man whose life he is studying. Most of the books included in the list are contained in the valuable collections of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, and the preparation of the monograph has been possible only because of the cordial co-operation and painstaking care of Miss Anna M. Doerksen, Superintendent of Circulation in that institution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Maryland, Two Hundred Years Ago: A Discourse Such was the termination of that great drama, in which Charles had been a prominent actor; and in which, by his exaggerated estimate of the kingly prerogative, by his blind ness to the spread of true ideas of political and religious liberty, by his weak subterfuges and despicable insincerity, by the bigotry of his religious and the obstinacy of his politi cal advisers, he had been lcd into straits from which there was no escape; and found, in the executioner's axe, the only means of unloosing the Gordian knot of difficulty and distress, in which he beheld himself entangled.
