Wind power is developing rapidly, in terms of both the number of new installations and in interest from stakeholders including policy-makers, NGOs, research scientists, industry and the general public. Unlike the majority of other texts on wind power, which are written primarily for engineers or policy analysts, this book specifically targets those interested in, or planning to develop, wind power projects. Having outlined wind power basics and explained the underlying resource and technology, the author explores the interactions between wind power and society, and the main aspects of project development, including siting, economics and legislation. This book will be an essential reference for professionals developing new sites, government officials and consultants reviewing related applications, and both specialists and non-specialists studying wind power project development.

Nuclear Power in the Developing World (1982) explores the issue of nuclear power policies in developing countries. The sharp oil price rises of the 1970s attracted widespread attention to nuclear power as an alternative energy source, while some developing countries began attaining the technological ability to develop nuclear weapons programmes. While the search for energy should not be thwarted, the quest for nuclear weapons should not be promoted. The tension between these two goals has often led to confused export policies in the nuclear supplier nations. The author attacks this confusion at its source by examining first-hand the motives which drive nuclear policies in the developing world. He explores how security and economic objectives, domestic policies and foreign influence shape nuclear policies, enriching his analysis with examples from South American, African and Asian experiences. This volume also takes into account those without active nuclear programmes, to better understand how such programmes are born. This approach demonstrates that countries such as India, Pakistan and Argentina entertain different priorities from countries such as Brazil, Taiwan and the Philippines in promoting nuclear power.

Exploring the nature of space programs and how nations can maximize advantages gained from space operations, this book draws from military and economic theory to describe an original model of the development and employment of a nation's ability to operate in space. Chapters discuss the implications for the history and organization of America's space program, particularly its military dimension. The rise of American naval power early in the 20th century is investigated as an historical analog to the current American situation in space, and a method is proposed for the U.S. to lead a new space age. Developing Cultural Humility offers a unique look into the journeys of psychologists striving towards an integration of multiculturalism in their personal and professional lives. Contributing authors—representing a mix of “cultural backgrounds” but stereotypically identified as “White”—engage in thoughtful dialogue with psychologists from underrepresented communities who are identified as established and respected individuals within the multicultural field. The contributing authors discuss both the challenges and rewards they experienced in their own journeys and how they continue to engage in the process of staying connected to their cultural identity and to being culturally responsive. In addition, psychologists who represent historically disenfranchised communities have similarly reflected on their own journey, while offering commentary to the personal stories of White psychologists. This text is useful for stimulating discussions about privilege, power, and the impact race has on either bringing people together or creating more distance, whether intentionally or unintentionally. It demonstrates to readers how to engage in the process of examining one’s own “culture” in more intentional ways, and discusses the implications as we move towards engaging in more dialogue around multicultural issues.
