The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), being built at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, utilizes a high intensity particle accelerator for neutron production. One of the challenges in SNS, as with all high intensity accelerators, is to minimize the amount of beam lost. High beam losses can cause costly damage and lead to residual activation of accelerator components, which complicates routine maintenance. One of the key components in beam loss at SNS is the development and propagation of beam halo. Halo particles are those driven to large amplitudes by space charge forces between the beam particles or by mismatch between the beam and the accelerator optics. The research presented seeks to develop computational tools to quantify the halo in a beam by analyzing beam profiles and identifying the halo using the Gaussian area ratio and kurtosis methods. Simulations of various configurations using three types of initial simulated distributions, along with an analysis of their phase space and rms properties, provides insight into the development of halo in the SNS linear accelerator. Finally, comparisons with machine beam profile data, taken at the same conditions as that of the simulated data, shows how accurately the simulations model the beam and its halo development and provides a better understanding of the best machine configuration with which to minimize beam halo and losses. Results of simulated data are independent of the initial distribution for strongly mismatched cases; however, even relatively well matched cases generate some halo. Core analysis reveals an increase in beam size as halo decreases for simulated cases. Experimental comparison with simulation results shows poor correlation between halo plots but moderate agreement in profile plots.

Uncontrolled beam loss is a major concern in the operation of a high intensity hadron linac. A low density cloud of particles with large oscillation amplitudes, so called halo, can form around the dense regular beam core. This halo can be a direct or indirect cause of beam loss. There is experimental evidence of halo growing in the SNS linac and limiting the further reduction of beam loss. A set of tools is being developed for detecting of the halo and investigating its origin and dynamics. The set includes high resolution emittance measurements in the injector, laser based emittance measurements at 1 GeV, and high resolution profile measurements along the linac. We will present our experience with useful measurement techniques and data analysis algorithms.

This book presents a scientific assessment of free-electron-laser technology for naval applications. The charge from the Office of Naval Research was to assess whether the desired performance capabilities are achievable or whether fundamental limitations will prevent them from being realized. The present study identifies the highest-priority scientific and technical issues that must be resolved along the development path to achieve a megawatt-class free-electron laser. In accordance with the charge, the committee considered (and briefly describes) trade-offs between free-electron lasers and other types of lasers and weapon systems to show the advantages free-electron lasers offer over other types of systems for naval applications as well as their drawbacks. The primary advantages of free-electron lasers are associated with their energy delivery at the speed of light, selectable wavelength, and all-electric nature, while the trade-offs for free-electron lasers are their size, complexity, and relative robustness. Also, Despite the significant technical progress made in the development of high-average-power free-electron lasers, difficult technical challenges remain to be addressed in order to advance from present capability to megawatt-class power levels.

High average current and high brightness electron beams are needed for many applications. At the Jefferson Lab FEL facility, the search for dark matter with the FEL laser beam has produced some interesting results, and a second very promising experiment called DarkLight, using the JLab Energy-recovery-linac (ERL) machine has been put forward. Although the required beam current has been achieved on this machine, one key challenge is the management of beam halo. At the University of Md. (UMD) we have demonstrated a high dynamic range halo measurement method using a digital micro-mirror array device (DMD). A similar system has been established at the JLab FEL facility as a joint effort by UMD and JLab to measure the beam halo on the high current ERL machine. Preliminary experiments to characterize the halo were performed on the new UV FEL. In this paper, the limitations of the present system will be analyzed and a discussion of other approaches (such as an optimized coronagraph) for further extending the dynamic range will be presented. We will also discuss the possibility of performing both longitudinal and transverse (3D) halo measurements together on a single system.

Understanding and controlling the physics of space charge effects in linear and circular proton and ion accelerators are essential to their operation, and to future high-intensity facilities. This book presents the status quo of this field from a theoretical perspective, compares analytical approaches with multi-particle computer simulations and – where available – with experiments. It discusses fundamental concepts of phase space motion, matched beams and modes of perturbation, along with mathematical models of analysis – from envelope to Vlasov-Poisson equations. The main emphasis is on providing a systematic description of incoherent and coherent resonance phenomena; parametric instabilities and sum modes; mismatch and halo; error driven resonances; and emittance exchange due to anisotropy, as well as the role of Landau damping. Their distinctive features are elaborated in the context of numerous sample simulations, and their potential impacts on beam quality degradation and beam loss are discussed. The book is intended for advanced beginners in accelerator research, and for experts interested in the mechanisms of direct space charge interaction and their modeling.

This volume comprises the proceedings of the 8th Joint School on accelerator physics. On this occasion, the US, CERN, Japan and Russia Particle Accelerator Schools collaborated to present the topic of “Beam Measurements”. The aim was to provide an introduction to the principles of beam dynamics and measurements in circular particle accelerators. This was achieved by a series of lectures under the headings of “single-particle dynamics”, “multi-particle dynamics” and then “beam measurements”, along with practical courses on feedback and signal processing, maps and (no) simulations, practical diagnostic measurements, and spectrum and network analyzers. The resulting proceedings represent a unique summary of the currently available knowledge on beam measurements applied to circular particle accelerators.
