Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject African Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: none, , course: International Studies and Diplomacy, language: English, abstract: War is the highest form of political struggle for resolving contradictions, when they have developed to a certain stage either between classes, nations, states or political groups. Hence, the rapport between war and peace is being determined by the approach or position of diplomacy. Since the failure of diplomacy usually laid the basis for the start of war, and after all wars, peace often reign, it is of enormous significance to recognize the important relationship between war and diplomacy. Like all civil wars, the Nigerian civil war was unique in the context of the nation’s history. This is because it was the most vivid expression of a country turned against itself. As with civil wars in other countries, the Nigerian civil war can be analyzed within the context of a failed diplomatic act. Hence, this paper discussed the position of negotiation or peace talk before and after the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970. It has also looked at the general impact of diplomacy during the period of the crisis.

In this intriguing new book, Onianwa Oluchukwu Ignatus examines the role of British intelligence in the Nigerian Civil War. British intelligence operations were highly successful due to a decentralized approach. Britain maintained regular supplies of arms to Nigeria despite considerable opposition at home. Thus, up-to-date information was necessary to determine the military behavior of both sides and the practicalities of arms supply for Nigeria. The influx of external forces into the civil war and increased military supplies from the Soviet Union and France also influenced British intelligence assessments. The book's central argument or, rather, its historical lesson, is that intelligence operations must have a goal and must allow for wider analysis, maximum objectivity, and a diversity of opinion.

"Gulliver's Troubles offers the first comprehensive assessment of the post-Cold War foreign policy of Nigeria - one of Africa's most important states. Expert contributors, comprising academics and scholar-diplomats, analyse Nigeria's most vital domestic challenges and critical regional issues from historical and contemporary perspectives. Nigeria's relations with its neighbours and other significant states and regional and international bodies also come under scrutiny. The debates here, while multi-faceted, share the premise that an effective foreign policy must be built on a sound domestic base and democratic stability."--BOOK JACKET.
