Meanwhile, images, narrative, and affect do the work of law; authorizing and legitimizing the discounting of some lives so that others – implicitly, American nationals – may live. How then, as we live through this unending, globalized war, are we to make sense of law in relation to the valuing of life? Adopting an interdisciplinary approach to law to excavate the workings of necropolitical law, and interrogating the US state's justifications for the project of counterterror, this book's temporal arc, the long War on Terror, illuminates the profound continuities and many guises for racialized, imperial violence informing the contemporary discounting of life.

The identified lives effect describes the fact that people demonstrate a stronger inclination to assist persons and groups identified as at high risk of great harm than those who will or already suffer similar harm, but endure unidentified. As a result of this effect, we allocate resources reactively rather than proactively, prioritizing treatment over prevention. For example, during the August 2010 gold mine cave-in in Chile, where ten to twenty million dollars was spent by the Chilean government to rescue the 33 miners trapped underground. Rather than address the many, more cost effective mine safety measures that should have been implemented, the Chilean government and international donors concentrated efforts in large-scale missions that concerned only the specific group. Such bias as illustrated through this incident raises practical and ethical questions that extend to almost every aspect of human life and politics. What can social and cognitive sciences teach us about the origin and triggers of the effect? Philosophically and ethically, is the effect a "bias" to be eliminated or is it morally justified? What implications does the effect have for health care, law, the environment and other practice domains? This volume is the first to take an interdisciplinary approach toward answering this issue of identified versus statistical lives by considering a variety of perspectives from psychology, public health, law, ethics, and public policy.

The purpose of the current study is to evaluate the relationship between discounting immediate and former life statuses prior to death related to quality of life across the lifespan. A discounting survey was completed by 83 participants in which they were asked to make hypothetical choices regarding returning back to an age they preferred or remaining at their current age prior to dying. In addition, participants completed surveys measuring quality of life, death depression, and death anxiety. Results indicated that participants who reported low quality of life and experienced high depression and anxiety towards death responded more impulsively to the discounting survey, engaging in steeper discounting. Additionally, results indicated that a positive correlation between participants aged 30 to 50 years old and AUC exists, indicating that as age increases, impulsivity decreases. However, this same trend was not evident in participants over the age of 65, yielding no correlation. Strengths and limitations, implications of the current study's findings, and opportunities for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the current study is to evaluate the relationship between discounting immediate and former life statuses prior to death related to quality of life across the lifespan.
