Excerpt from Discourses on the Christian Spirit and Life Is there a business-man, of whatever religious repute in his sectarian or theological circle, With his name standing however high on the roll of believ ers or saints, who yet regards his religion like his Sunday garment, as a thing to be left out of his shop or counting-room, lest it be soiled there in the rough hands of the world? There will be a littleness and disingenuousness in that man's secular proceedings, exposing him, if not, alas the religion he professes, to contempt. Religion is not so dainty about herself as this sub scriber of her creeds, and observer of her forms, is about her. She is ready to go, with the whole power and splendor of her celestial presence, into the com monest scenes, for the adjustment of the humblest matters. This separation of religion and business is no fiction, or supposed case for the sake of argument and moving appeal. I have known one in the very heat of religions enthusiasm, and with the most sacred names upon his lips, defraud a poor woman in the performance of a stipulated service, without seeming to imagine there was any inconsistency. Excerpt from Endeavours After the Christian Life: Discourses The Author would have introduced a larger number of Discourses having direct reference, in word as well as in spirit, to the Divine Ministry of Christ, did he not hope to follow up the present volume by another devoted especially to this subject, and a third on the Christianity of Paul. In the meanwhile, he trusts that those who, in devout reading of books and men, look for that rather which is Christian than which talks of Christianity, will find in this little volume no faint impression of the religion by which he, no less than they, desires to live and die. Excerpt from Studies in the Life of Christ T hese Studies in the Life of Christ were originally prepared as a series of Sunday evening discourses, while the author was a minister in Aberdeen. This is stated, partly, that he may connect them with a city and people he will always love, and, partly, that he may thus most simply define their real character and limits. They are not exhaustive and critical discussions on the Gospel History, but, at most, attempts at orientation - at reach ing points of view from which the life of Christ may be understood and construed. Excerpt from The World of Matter and the Spirit of Man: Latest Discourse of Religion These sermons indicate clearly the remarkable de gree to which Parker kept abreast of the growing knowledge and thought of his day, and even much in advance of them. He welcomed every phase of the scientific advance being made around him, and he hailed with enthusiasm the labors of Darwin, which came im perfectly to his knowledge in the last months of his life. No theist of 1858 could have anticipated more completely than he the reconstruction of theological opinions resulting from the theory of evolution. I may venture to think that nothing has yet been written which shows so complete an acceptance of man's relations to the universe, and yet so profound a piety, as some of the sermons contained in this volume.
