Dot, a young surf girl from England, moves with her mum to the small, dusty beach town of Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. At first, Dot struggles to fit in to her new school and to make friends. Until, that is, she meets Pollyanna Pocket, her dog and loyal sidekick. The two friends soon learn that the lush forests of Santa Teresa and the ocean are filled with incredible friends and magical adventures just waiting to be discovered. It seems that the creatures of the Land Above the Water and of the Ocean Deeps are keen to share what they know with Dot — that we are all connected, we are all one. Dot is launched into a journey of self-discovery, as she learns to see the magic that surrounds her everyday.

This thesis offers a comprehensive introduction to surface acoustic waves in the quantum regime. It addresses two of the most significant technological challenges in developing a scalable quantum information processor based on spins in quantum dots: (i) decoherence of the electronic spin qubit due to the surrounding nuclear spin bath, and (ii) long-range spin-spin coupling between remote qubits. Electron spins confined in quantum dots (QDs) are among the leading contenders for implementing quantum information processing. To this end, the author pursues novel strategies that turn the unavoidable coupling to the solid-state environment (in particular, nuclear spins and phonons) into a valuable asset rather than a liability.

The book entitled Nonmagnetic and Magnetic Quantum Dots is divided into two sections. In Section 1, the chapters are related to nonmagnetic quantum dots and their applications. More specifically, exact models and numerical methods have been presented to describe the analytical solution of the carrier wave functions, the quantum mechanical aspects of quantum dots, and the comparison of the latter to experimental data. Furthermore, methods to produce quantum dots, synthesis techniques of colloidal quantum dots, and applications on sensors and biology, among others, are included in this section. In Section 2, a few topics of magnetic quantum dots and their applications are presented. The section starts with a theoretical model to describe the magnetization dynamics in magnetic quantum dot array and the description of dilute magnetic semiconducting quantum dots and their applications. Additionally, a few applications of magnetic quantum dots in sensors, biology, and medicine are included in Section 2.
