Based on six years of extended ethnography in multiple agricultural areas of the Eastern United States, Down Country Lanes, Behind Abandoned Houses is a monograph which explores the lives of migrant and seasonal farm workers. The six-year study secured multi-setting field data in primary, secondary and casual sites, and audio-taped narrative life stories from men and women who harvest and perform the related tasks that help to make the many foods which we enjoy in abundance. The study presented in this book elaborates vignettes from field observations with a focus on workers who use drugs and alcohol, and is complemented by formal (narrative life stories) and informal interviews. The author explores diverse field data that reveal the hardships, exclusion and social adversities that migrant farm workers experience many times more often than any other social group with considerable susceptibility to drug / alcohol use. Down Country Lanes, Behind Abandoned Houses gives readers a perspective about farm workers’ social vulnerability across multiple agricultural areas, while comparing willful neglect and social non-existence experienced by farm workers to a gray zone of contemporary horrors in the way that these men and women have been viewed and treated over many decades. The monograph is an invaluable reference for the study of social problems, substance abuse, trans-national migratory experiences and field methods in sociology. The book also serves as a contemporary handbook on the anthropology of American agricultural labor.

From Morgan Rice, #1 Bestselling author of THE VAMPIRE JOURNALS, comes the first book in a new trilogy of dystopian fiction. New York. 2120. American has been decimated, wiped out from the second Civil War. In this post-apocalyptic world, survivors are far and few between. And most of those who do survive are members of the violent gangs, predators who live in the big cities. They patrol the countryside looking for slaves, for fresh victims to bring back into the city for their favorite death sport: Arena One. The death stadium where opponents are made to fight to the death, in the most barbaric of ways. There is only one rule to the arena: no one survives. Ever. Deep in the wilderness, high up in the Catskill Mountains, 17 year old Brooke Moore manages to survive, hiding out with her younger sister, Bree. They are careful to avoid the gangs of slaverunners who patrol the countryside. But one day, Brooke is not as careful as she can be, and Bree is captured. The slaverunners take her away, heading to the city, and to what will be a certain death. Brooke, a Marine’s daughter, was raised to be tough, to never back down from a fight. When her sister is taken, Brooke mobilizes, uses everything at her disposal to chase down the slaverunners and get her sister back. Along the way she runs into Ben, 17, another survivor like her, whose brother was taken. Together, they team up on their rescue mission. What follows is a post-apocalyptic, action-packed thriller, as the two of them pursue the slaverunners on the most dangerous ride of their lives, following them deep into the heart of New York. Along the way, if they are to survive, they will have to make some of the hardest choices and sacrifices of their lives, encountering obstacles neither of them had expected—including their unexpected feelings for each other. Will they rescue their siblings? Will they make it back? And will they, themselves, have to fight in the arena? ARENA ONE is Book #1 in the Survival Trilogy, and is 85,000 words.

Crete offers an incredibly multifaceted realm for walkers. Many areas of the island are still rugged and pristine. The island’s terrain is dominated by three mighty mountain ranges, furrowed by deep gorges. Lofty mountains and a deep-blue sea are in close proximity – an ideal combination for any holiday. The finest coastal and mountain walks on Greece’s largest and most diverse island can be found in the Rother Walking Guide »Crete«. The choice ranges from a pleasant walk across foothills through vineyards and sprawling groves of olive trees all the way up to the highest panoramic summits. There are even some demanding peaks, over 2000 metres in height, to climb. Breathtaking canyons can be traversed and isolated, dripstone caves are waiting to be explored. Everywhere you look, you’ll find little villages, secluded monasteries and remote caves. Coastal trails lead to tranquil coves for bathing; is there anything better than, after a walk, taking a dip in some refreshing waters? Even the classic Cretan walks, like the Samaria Gorge and Dead’s Gorge with its Minoan palace grounds, are included in this guide. Rolf Goetz, a seasoned writer of walking guides for the Bergverlag Rother, presents 70 walks on the island of Crete, all rich in diversity. Each individual walk includes a short preface with all the important key points, an exact description of the route, a pertinent height profile and a little walking map with the route marked in. Apart from these, there are many tips pertaining to the availability of refreshment, possible alternative routes as well as sites worth a visit. GPS tracks are available for downloading. Numerous delightful photos whet the appetite for making the island your first choice for your next holiday sojourn. An essential guide for Crete fans!
