Born in Bear Valley, Wisconsin, raised in nearby Richland Center, then Massachusetts before settling in south central Wisconsin, Frank Lloyd Wright always knew that he would be an architect. He wanted to create a Democratic American Architecture. With his Prairie homes, he achieved the first part of his goal, American Architecture. It was based upon geometry, the cruciform/pinwheel and square. With his Usonian houses, he created the next part, Democratic, thus achieving Democratic American Architecture. This was achieved by reducing the Prairie cruciform to a simple L.It is not easy for most to visualize in three dimensions, especially when one must do so from a two-dimensional plan. Yet Wright could visualize his idea for a building in three dimensions before he drew it in two.Two plans that, on paper, look identical, might be hugely different, depending on scale. SIZE MATTERS.For the author of this book, William Allin Storrer, Ph.D., the ability to visualize in three dimensions came when he took special tests with the Detroit Board of Education. Supposedly difficult spatial problems he solved quickly. But this ability didn't come into focus until he was enrolled in his doctoral program. For an architectural seminar, he was required to draw the plan of a "typical" building of each era in modern architecture: Greek, Roman, Medieval, Renaissance . . . First the Parthenon, then the Pantheon. Each fit the 11 x 8 1/2 inch paper. Seeking a perfect Gothic work, he discovered the cathedral of Amiens, France, Notre Dame D'Amiens, constructed in less than fifty years, a perfect example of Gothic. By the time he'd drawn the upper half of the east end, he'd filled the paper. Had he visualized the entire work in three dimensions, the full size of the cathedral would have been apparent and he'd have used a larger paper rather than tape pages together! SIZE MATTERS.Thus this book includes American houses and apartment buildings, for it is devoted to "the space within to be lived in," as Wright stated it. It is hoped that this will open new ways of envisioning Wright's monumental catalog of domestic works.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Wasmuth folios, one of the most important publications on modern architecture in the 20th century, is available once again from Rizzoli. First published in Germany in 1910, these 100 plates of Wright's early work had enormous influence on the architects of the time and will provide a valuable resource to historians and architects today. This facsimile edition includes the original selection of presentation and working drawings form the Oak Park period, the years perhaps most crucial to Wright's development. Also faithfully reproduced are the architect's own introduction and his comments on each project. A new foreword discusses the recently discovered historic background of these folios and Wright's intention to proffer them as a primer for a new democratic American architecture.

A reissue in the Frank Lloyd Wright 150th anniversary year of the series of lectures which the celebrated American architect gave in London in 1939 and which outline his core philosophy of 'organic architecture'. In May 1939, the celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright visited London and gave four lectures at the Royal Institute of British Architects. The meetings were hailed at the time as the most remarkable events of recent architectural affairs in England, and the lectures were published as An Organic Architecture in September 1939 by Lund Humphries. The texts remain an important expression of the architect's core philosophy and are being reissued now in a new edition to commemorate the 150th anniversary in 2017 of Frank Lloyd Wright's birth. In the lectures, Frank Lloyd Wright discusses several of his recent projects, including his Usonian houses, his homes and studios at Taliesin, Wisconsin and Arizona, Fallingwater and the Johnson administration building. His charismatic, flamboyant character and hugely creative intelligence leap to life from the pages as he looks to the 'Future', both in terms of the then-imminent Second World War and his vision for cities. This new edition includes an insightful new essay by esteemed architectural historian, Professor Andrew Saint, which sets the lectures within context and highlights their continued resonance and appeal
