Excerpt from Early Times in Texas It is due to our colored citizens to say, that in depicting the character of Cudjo, I had no intention whatever to ridi cule or cast a slur upon them. I have merely attempted to describe a type of the race common amongst them in ante bellum days, and which in all probability would have been as common among any other race of people, if like them they had been for so long a time subjected to the demoral izing influences of ignorance and a degrading servitude. Now that they have been liberated by the arbitrament of the sword, and can avail themselves of all their rights as free citizens of our common country, I hope (and believe from the advances they have already made) that the time will soon come when they will place themselves upon a level with those who enjoyed all the advantages of freedom whilst they were in a state of slavery. Excerpt from Early Pioneer Days in Texas Friends, early pioneers and settlers and a few remaining schoolmates of our log cabin school days: I write these lines in commemoration of the days of long ago; the days that were spent in preparation for the glorious results which have come to Texas and her people. The younger gen eration cannot know nor understand the dangers, nor the inconveniences, that beset us in the early days; neither can they comprehend how tedious was the slow and labored journeys we had to make to go from place to place. Now it is an easy task to travel two or three hundred miles a day, and at little cost, but in those days when we had to pick our way through vast country expanses and find our road the best we could as we went along, it was a tedious and expensive journey, both because of expenditure of energy and of means as well. John Crittenden Duval (1816-1897) was an American writer of Texas literature. He has been noted as being the first Texas man of letters[1] and was dubbed the "Father of Texas Literature" by J. Frank Dobie.[2] His Early Times in Texas was initially published serially in 1867 in Burke's Weekly (Macon, Georgia) and was finally published in book form in 1892. The story, which became a Texas classic, recounted Duval's escape from the Goliad Massacre, in which his own brother Burr H. Duval was killed, as well as other tales. Another brother, Thomas Howard DuVal, was a distinguished Texas judge. The men's father, William Pope Duval, was a long-time Territorial Governor of Florida.

Excerpt from Rodriguez Memoirs of Early Texas Y earliest recollection is when I was a boy about six years old. One evening I was coming with my father and mother up Soledad Street, where the Kampmann Building is now, and as we got a little further up the street, we were stopped by a sentry and there were other soldiers there and we saw some breastworks there. General Cos, the Mexican general, my father told me, was in possession of the town. We went a little further down where the present corner of Travis and Soledad Street is. We crossed a ditch on a plank and went up Soledad Street to see my uncle, Jose Olivarri. I heard a great deal of shooting towards the Plaza and my father said that General Burleson of the Texas Army was trying to capture the city. The next day General Cos capitulated and was allowed to take his arms and leave the city. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
