A Paramedic is typically one of the first healthcare professionals to arrive at the scene of an emergency. They work to assess patients, provide emergency care, monitor patients, take observations, administer medication and pain relief, and transport patient's to hospital if indicated. The role of a Paramedic is not easy. There is a lot of pressure to carry on a single pair of shoulders. Now this book is a short book that I've written from my point of view so far on my journey as a Student Paramedic. It highlights both the ups and downs of the course I've experienced so far and my progression. I've just completed my second-year as a Student Paramedic and am soon to start my third year which I am nervous but excited about! This book works to try and provide a truthful insight into this career path and the obstacles I've personally faced along the way. I am also a Muslim hijabi girl and in the book I discuss struggles I've faced and how I've responded to them! My aim as an individual part of the BAME community and someone who is passionate about mental health, is to showcase the different possibilities faced in the role and how mental health can become a component of this. The book is very centred around mental health and not giving up, and discusses a few cases that I've attended to. It highlights the importance of identifying and overcoming obstacles and weakness, and how to counteract them. It emphasises the need for strong communication, empathy, good decision making skills, resilience and determination. It shows that even through struggles and feelings of uncertainty, anything is possible!

Cardiac arrest can strike a seemingly healthy individual of any age, race, ethnicity, or gender at any time in any location, often without warning. Cardiac arrest is the third leading cause of death in the United States, following cancer and heart disease. Four out of five cardiac arrests occur in the home, and more than 90 percent of individuals with cardiac arrest die before reaching the hospital. First and foremost, cardiac arrest treatment is a community issue - local resources and personnel must provide appropriate, high-quality care to save the life of a community member. Time between onset of arrest and provision of care is fundamental, and shortening this time is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of death and disability from cardiac arrest. Specific actions can be implemented now to decrease this time, and recent advances in science could lead to new discoveries in the causes of, and treatments for, cardiac arrest. However, specific barriers must first be addressed. Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival examines the complete system of response to cardiac arrest in the United States and identifies opportunities within existing and new treatments, strategies, and research that promise to improve the survival and recovery of patients. The recommendations of Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival provide high-priority actions to advance the field as a whole. This report will help citizens, government agencies, and private industry to improve health outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest across the United States.
