This study suggested the determining role of d-states and therefore led to studies of transition metals and, in the final year, to a concentration on transition-metal compounds. This report discusses the evolution and the problems addressed. The final section describes the principal findings, each topic being summarized by a paragraph on the status of that problem. The completed parts of the program have been published in the series of papers listed in the report.
