The judge of the circuit court had been accustomed to pass a part of his time at their hospitable mansion, as often as business brought him to the town, near which Mr. Livingston and his daughter resided. The morning following the conversation which we have recorded in the last two chapters, Mr. Livingston met him at the post office, and invited him to dine with him. He had heard rumors of the great change which had taken place in his former friend, and could not forbear a jest at his expense. It was with Mr. Livingston, however, a matter too serious for mirth, and yet he felt some gratification in the prospect of gaining from the judge some information concerning the subject which had occupied Bo much of the time and thoughts of his daughter and himself, for the last few days. Judge Carrington had never been a professed infidel. He did not think it amiss to have some sort of religion, and preferred that which placed least restraint upon his inclinations. In the days when Edward Livingston was a reviler of the Bible, and a scoffer at its teachings, they had been boon companions, and it did not appear that his religious faith or feelings, created any barrier to their social intercourse or friendship. In fact, no infidel enjoyed more the abuse which the proud unbeliever was accustomed to pour out upon the Bible, and especially upon the ministers of the gospel.
