The setting is a Massachusetts mill town in the months leading up to Pearl Harbor. Events in North Eliot revolve around a small variety store operated by Dora Brennan and her husband. The Brennans have a son, Freddie, from whose 10-11-year-old perspective some of the foibles and more serious transgressions of the adults around him are viewed. In one instance, he accidently views his cousins wife nude on a bed with a man she met only hours before. He manages a stealthy retreat and keeps the discovery to himself. One of the major disappointments of Freddie's young life comes when one of the mills in town sells at auction all of the houses it owns on two streets. Freddie is devastated when his parents have insufficient resources to follow through on plans to buy a building in which to combine

It is commonly held that our thoughts, beliefs, desires and feelings - the mental phenomena that we instantiate - are constituted by states and processes that occur inside our head. The view known as externalism, however, denies that mental phenomena are internal in this sense. The mind is not purely in the head. Mental phenomena are hybrid entities that straddle both internal state and processes and things occurring in the outside world. The development of externalist conceptions of the mind is one of the most controversial, and arguably one of the most important, developments in the philosophy of mind in the second half of the twentieth century. Yet, despite its significance most recent work on externalism has been highly technical, clouding its basic ideas and principles. Moreover, very little work has been done to locate externalism within philosophical developments in both analytic and continental traditions. In this book, Mark Rowlands aims to remedy both these problems and present for the reader a clear and accessible introduction to the subject grounded in wider developments in the history of philosophy. Rowlands shows that externalism has significant and respectable historical roots that make it much more important than a specific eruption that occurred in late twentieth-century analytic philosophy.

Gullah Redemption presents a vivid description of a unique group within the African American Culture. The author who is Gullah gives a spell binding account of his miraculous conversion to Christ. Unlike his ancestors who were forced to listen to slave masters as they read the holy scriptures to justify use of free labor while maintaining the obedience of many docile captives. Brown suggests that some 75% of Blacks living in the United States remain unaware of his one of a kind group. The Gullah living on seacoast islands bordering mainly South Carolina and Georgia represent a people having the purest bloodline of all African slaves brought to North America in wooden ships. While proud knowledge of the blood of a people is very important, most important is theological knowledge that the blood of Jesus links and binds together every born-again human for time and eternity. In our present age of hate mongering, division, lawlessness, and fear, we would do well to acknowledge words Holy Spirit gave to Apostle Paul in his letter written around A. D. 40-60 to the Church in Galatians 3:28-29. There is neither Jew, Greek, Gullah, Russian, Italian, or Hispanic in Christ. We are “all” by faith Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise. Sandwiched between Chapters 3 and 11 is the book written in 2006, “Call Me Gullah: An American Heritage”. Included at the end of this work are Pastor Brown’s sermon notes from a message delivered October 6, 2019 entitled: “A Universal Gospel of Inclusion”.

Born in 1930, the mixed-race son of a hard-drinking black prostitute and a white cotton broker, Sample was raised in the Jim Crow South by an abusive mother who refused to let her son—who could pass for white—call her Mama. He watched for the police while she worked, whether as a prostitute, bootlegger, or running the best dice game in town. He loved his mother deeply but could no longer take her abuse and ran away from home at the age of twelve. In his early twenties, Sample was arrested for burglary, robbery, and robbery by assault and was sentenced to nearly twenty years in the Texas prison system in the 1950s and 60s. His light complexion made him stand out in the all-black prison plantation known as the “burnin’ hell,” where he and over four hundred prisoners picked cotton and worked the land while white shotgun-carrying guards followed on horseback. Sample earned the moniker “Racehoss” for his ability to hoe cotton faster than anyone else in his squad.
