Northeast India is a multifaceted and dynamic region that is constantly in focus because of its fragile political landscape characterized by endemic violence and conflicts. One of the first of its kind, this reader on Northeast India examines myriad aspects of the region – its people and its linguistic and cultural diversity. The chapters here highlight the key issues confronted by the Northeast in recent times: its history, politics, economy, gender equations, migration, ethnicity, literature and traditional performative practices. The book presents interlinkages between a range of socio-cultural issues and armed political violence while covering topics such as federalism, nationality, population, migration and social change. It discusses debates on development with a view to comprehensive policies and state intervention. With its a nuanced and wide-ranging overview, this volume makes new contributions to understanding a region that is critical to the future of South Asian geopolitics. The book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of contemporary Northeast India as well as history, political science, area studies, international relations, sociology and social anthropology. It will also appeal to those interested in public administration, regional literature, cultural studies, population studies, development studies and economics. Chapter 31 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

This book examines the structural changes in the labour market in North-East India. Going beyond the conventional study of tea and agricultural sectors, it focuses on the nature, pattern and structure of work and employment in the region as well as documents emerging shifts in the labour force towards farm to non-farm dynamics. The chapters explore historical developments in employment patterns, labour market policies, issues of gender and social-religious dimensions, as well as point to growing forms of casual, informal and contractual labour across sectors. Through large-scale data and detailed case studies on unfree labour in plantations and those employed in crafts, handloom and the manufacturing industry, the book provides insights into labour and employment in the region. It also delves into the temporal and spatial dimensions of non-farm employment and its relationship with rural income distribution and labour mobility. By bringing interdisciplinary perspectives from scholars working on North-East India, this work fills a major gap in the political economy of the labour market in the region. The volume will be useful to scholars and researchers of development studies, North-East India studies, labour studies, economics, sociology and political science as well to those involved with governance and policymaking.

Politics of Soft Power Diplomacy and its Reponses is the outcome of Seminar Series at Mt Everest College, Senapati (Manipur) for the past more than half dozen decade of continual effort, sustained by loving promotion and encouragement received from reputed ICSSR and UGC in granting Seminar grant to me as convener of this series. The book covers wide ranges of inclusion and exclusion in accessing mainstream projects and government programmes which are dealt and discussed here by different contributors of papers from various academic disciplines. It is felt that Soft Power Diplomacy is very instrumental in shaping the image of a country abroad. Joseph Nye coined the term and domestic policies are as important as foreign polices. Classical Realists too have informed consent on the similar understanding of domestic domain having ramification on foreign policies for a country. The author/editor of this book feels that the work will contribute in its bit to researches and analyses and expected that the gap in formulating the issues pertaining to the marginalized and suppressed groups in policy formulation and implementation can be further carried in future. I always said that soft corner given to minorities and dominated section in any given group/society is pre-requisite to development of the country. If in a given country, only the the majority rules, then that country would never be called a pluralistic and cosmopolitan approach in its shape of designing the structure of its government and governance. Besides, the author/editor also has no doubt that such studies as this will be of special interest to academicians, policy makers, policy implementers, legal practitioners, politicians, activists, students, and public at large. As issues discussed here are all Soft Power Diplomacy domain that pertain to flexible and diversified components that are most required to address the grievances of the discriminated and dominated lots in the society.

Peer research is increasingly used in international academic, policy and practice environments. It engages members of a group or social network as trusted members of a research team working in communities and settings they are familiar with. Critics, however, point to methodological concerns with peer research. These include the extent to which peer researchers genuinely represent the populations under study; data confidentiality; the emotional burden of enquiring into sensitive issues peers may experience in their own lives; and the reliability and credibility of data collected by people who do not have academic training. The book seeks to counter the marginalisation of research experience and skills derived from close relationships with people and communities, while reflecting critically on the strengths and limitations of peer research. Chapters by a wide range of international contributors illustrate the potential of peer research to facilitate an in-depth understanding of health and social development issues and enhance policy and practice. This interdisciplinary book provides students and professionals working in health, social science and development studies with a thorough grounding in this new style of research. It will appeal to those interested in research and evaluation; sexual health and public health; mental health, disability and social care; gender and sexuality; conservation and environmental management; migration and citizenship studies; humanitarian issues; and international development.
