Excerpt from English Church Furniture: Ornaments and Decorations, at the Period of the Reformation, as Exhibited in a List of the Goods Destroyed in Certain Lincolnshire Churches, A. D. 1566 The series of documents here printed exists in a mutilated manuscript preserved among the miscellaneous papers in the Episcopal Registry at Lincoln. It has now no title other than the inscription Inventarium monumentorum superstitionis on the outside of its parchment cover. The volume consists of returns made in the eighth year of Elizabeth to certain royal commissioners, by the churchwardens of one hundred and fifty parishes in the county of Lincoln, of such articles of church furniture as had been used in the previous reign, but were in 1566 considered by the authorities to be superstitious or unnecessary. From the present state of the manuscript it is not possible to determine with certainty whether any leaves have been lost from the end. The binding seems to indicate that it was never much thicker than it is at present. The first six leaves have been torn away, and the next six so far mutilated as to render the documents very imperfect, and the sense, at times, obscure. With these exceptions and that of folios 125, 126, 156, 157, 163-165, 192-200, which have also unhappily perished, the book seems to be complete. The paper, handwriting, and general character prove that it is a record of the age to which it relates. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. When sacred objects were rejected during the Reformation, they were not always burned and broken but were sometimes given to children as toys. Play is typically seen as free and open, while iconoclasm, even to those who deem it necessary, is violent and disenchanting. What does it say about wider attitudes toward religious violence and children at play that these two seemingly different activities were sometimes one and the same? Drawing on a range of sixteenth-century artifacts, artworks, and texts, as well as on ancient and modern theories of iconoclasm and of play, Iconoclasm As Child's Play argues that the desire to shape and interpret the playing of children is an important cultural force. Formerly holy objects may have been handed over with an intent to debase them, but play has a tendency to create new meanings and stories that take on a life of their own. Joe Moshenska shows that this form of iconoclasm is not only a fascinating phenomenon in its own right; it has the potential to alter our understandings of the threshold between the religious and the secular, the forms and functions of play, and the nature of historical transformation and continuity.
