Excerpt from English Church Furniture At first it was proposed to confine these accounts and lists to pre-reformation days; but it was eventually decided to give a certain amount of general information down to the end of the seventeenth century. The original intention was to include descriptions of such matters as painted glass, wall paintings, floor tiles, and ironwork; but the plan became perforce more restricted for lack of space. It is possible that these subjects may be discussed in a future volume. The following pages have been in the course of preparation for about six years. The delay in issuing a book which has been so long announced has been caused by the desire of the authors to improve and perfect the lists of various articles of extant church furniture. They are, however, convinced that a delay of even double that period would not suffice to make the work actually complete, and are fully aware that it will be found deficient in some places, and perhaps incorrect in others. Nevertheless, it seems best to issue the book, notwithstanding its probable defects, for a postponement until perfection was attained would probably prove perpetual. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Excerpt from English Church Furniture: Ornaments and Decorations, at the Period of the Reformation, as Exhibited in a List of the Goods Destroyed in Certain Lincolnshire Churches, A. D. 1566 The series of documents here printed exists in a mutilated manuscript preserved among the miscellaneous papers in the Episcopal Registry at Lincoln. It has now no title other than the inscription Inventarium monumentorum superstitionis on the outside of its parchment cover. The volume consists of returns made in the eighth year of Elizabeth to certain royal commissioners, by the churchwardens of one hundred and fifty parishes in the county of Lincoln, of such articles of church furniture as had been used in the previous reign, but were in 1566 considered by the authorities to be superstitious or unnecessary. From the present state of the manuscript it is not possible to determine with certainty whether any leaves have been lost from the end. The binding seems to indicate that it was never much thicker than it is at present. The first six leaves have been torn away, and the next six so far mutilated as to render the documents very imperfect, and the sense, at times, obscure. With these exceptions and that of folios 125, 126, 156, 157, 163-165, 192-200, which have also unhappily perished, the book seems to be complete. The paper, handwriting, and general character prove that it is a record of the age to which it relates. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Early English Furniture and Woodwork, Vol. 2 The next type, Fig. 2, which also belongs to the thirteenth century, is where the front is formed with very wide upright styles fixed flush to the centre and acting as huge clamps. The tenons of the central panel are secured in the mortises of these vertical clamps by large wooden pegs, which are here allowed to project, and are finished Off as ornamental features. The entire front is fixed to the Sides with heavy wrought-iron nails. This chest is rare, for its date, in being ornamented with roundels and geometrical devices in chip-carving. As a rule, thirteenth-century chests are plain, and tracery was never applied. This Earl Stonham chest is supported on large runners, kept well away from the ends to minimise any tendency to sagging of the bottom.
