Insurance is one of Hong Kong's oldest industries. In the nineteenth century the lucrative trade between China and Europe carried many risks - piracy, warfare, fire, loss of goods, and other mishaps. Dozens of different insurance firms - some home-grown, others imported - established themselves in the colony to protect ships and their cargoes. With the diversification of Hong Kong's economy into manufacturing and services, Hong Kong became a global centre of insurance, and the industry continues to transform itself today through changing practices and new lines of business. This is the first comprehensive history of Hong Kong's insurance industry, and it argues its central importance in the economy. Typhoons, shipwrecks, fires, wars, political turbulence and unexpected events of all kinds provide a dramatic background to a fascinating survey; the book is richly illustrated with photographs and documents. Ngaw Mee Kauis a former vice president of Lingnan University, Hong Kong.Feng Bangyanis professor of the College of Economics, Jinan University. "The book will help students better understand the development of the industry and the important role it plays in Hong Kong, as well as building up their knowledge and sense of belonging in the industry. It will be of interest to people from the field of insurance and finance, people who are interested in Hong Kong history, as well as the general public." -- Chan Kin-por, chief executive, Hong Kong office, Munich Re

Vitamin and mineral (micronutrient) deficiencies impose high economic costs on virtually every developing country. But programs for alleviating these deficiencies are among the most cost-effective of all health programs—with high rates of return in terms of human resources. 'World Development Report 1993: Investing in Health' highlighted both needs and opportunities in this area. This report provides detailed arguments for addressing micronutrient malnutrition and practical advice drawn from program experience. The book suggests three main strategies: • Educate consumers so that they fully appreciate and understand the importance of micronutrients in their diet • Encourage the fortification of foodstuffs by combining market incentives and regulatory enforcement • Distribute, as a last resort, micronutrient capsules and other supplements, using all public and private channels available. World Bank-assisted projects in 30 countries now have micronutrient components. This number could grow, but the effort will require stronger partnerships with nongovernmental organizations, private industry, and international organizations.

In this candid autobiography, Amway cofounder Rich DeVos reflects on work, faith, family, and the core values he’s held on to, from his humble Christian upbringing through his enormous success running one of the world’s largest businesses. Few people embody the American entrepreneurial spirit as plainly as Rich DeVos. A prominent businessman, self-made billionaire, philanthropist, worldwide speaker, bestselling author, family man, and devout Christian, DeVos not only helped create Amway, one of the world’s biggest companies, but he did it from the ground up with his deep faith in God guiding the way and keeping his hopes alive. Now after the success of his bestselling books in business, DeVos reveals his personal story. Born to poor Dutch immigrants in rural Michigan during the Depression, DeVos learned about the importance of leadership and partnership. His grandfather, father, and teachers taught him valuable lessons and key principles about faith, optimism, and perseverance that would guide his entire life. In high school, he befriended Jay Van Andel, who later became his business partner. Together, they created a whole new way to sell products and established one of the largest, most successful companies in the world. DeVos also talks about his marriage and family, his experiences as a motivational speaker, his ownership of the NBA basketball team Orlando Magic, and his philanthropic, religious, and political endeavors. Inspiring, fascinating, and full of heart, Simply Rich: Life and Lessons from the Cofounder of Amway is the astonishing rags-to-riches story that few can tell. Through his amazing accomplishments as both a businessman and generous soul, DeVos reveals the true meaning of success and how his deep faith helped him become a true American icon.

Rhythms of life represent the courage to live life fully by striking the right balance between the physical, social, spiritual, material and emotional well-being. The entire universe is built on a delicate balance. Every night is followed by a day, every fall makes way for spring, every life is followed by death and every action has a reaction. There is perfect rhythm everywhere. In an orchestra, when all the instruments are playing in harmony, the sound is pleasing to the ears. However if any instrument is out of tune, the same pleasing symphony can become displeasing. Likewise, if life is in rhythm it is pleasing and fun. However when its balance is affected, the pleasure of living fades into anxiety, stress and negativity. This book will help you to develop self awareness, to understand what gives you happiness, and how best to maintain your rhythms of life. It will help uncover where the everlasting secret of happiness lies-it lies inside each one of us.
