An exploration of shamanism and the archetypal symbolism that sits at the foundation of all human life • Not just an academic work. Helps the reader experience the actual mindset of the shaman • Presents a cohesive view of the recurrent patterns of symbolism and visionary experience that underlie all religion The human psyche contains archetypal patterns largely lost to contemporary society but which shamans have employed for over 30,000 years to gain access to the spiritual world. Shamanic symbols both affect and reflect these durative patterns that exist, with uncanny similarity, in civilizations separated by expanses of time and distance. The Strong Eye of Shamanism draws together the many facets of the art of shamanism, presenting a cohesive view of the recurrent patterns of symbolism and visionary experience that underlie its practice. The "strong eye" of the title refers to the archetypal symbolism that sits at the foundation of all human life--whether in Paleolithic caves or today's temples. The author asserts that society has become separated from the power of those symbols that lead us into deeper understanding of our spirituality. In today's world of splintered psyches, a world in which people are in search of their souls, shamanism survives as an age-old technology of soul recovery, a living Rosetta stone that reminds us of the shared foundation that exists beneath even the most radically different perspectives. Through its study of shamanism, archetypal psychology, and symbolism, The Strong Eye of Shamanism encourages individuals--and society--to look inward and remember that the deepest forms of awareness begin with the knowledge that the answers reside within us.

This unusual book illustrates the life and wisdom of the Northwest healer and psychic, Char Sundust. Mikaya Heart was asked to write this book by Char, on the instructions of the spirits who are always at Char s side, offering invaluable advice. For two years, Mikaya followed Char around everywhere she went, re-visiting her childhood haunts and delving into her shamanic healing work. A skilled interviewer, she spent many hours with Char s family, friends, students and clients, gleaning in-depth information, then spinning this into a gripping narrative. Char was trained in Native American shamanic healing methods from the age of fifteen, and as a young adult she quickly began to heal others, radiating love and light. Now she does psychic readings to help people access the full potential of life; she does house blessings, which involve cleansing the energy of a space, removing stuck energy that might be manifesting in the form of ghosts, poltergeists, or simply unpleasant vibrations; and she does soul retrievals, which are about re-uniting an individual with parts of herself that she may have lost as a result of traumas on life s journey. Her greatest gift is being able to recognize and shift old, outmoded energy that is attached to people, things or places. Mikaya has been able to describe in detail the extraordinary healing that occurs in Char s work, with vivid concrete details of the different realms, entities, power animals, energies, archetypes and spirits that Char relates to on a daily basis. This is not only a delightful adventure story, it is also educational, chronicling in detail how healing of all kinds can be addressed on levels other than the physical. Char is a particularly gifted psychic, but all human beings can access a sense of the vastness of all-that-is, to a greater or lesser degree, and can choose to work with that sense, fine-tuning it to specifics. Everything that we see as solid was in the form of pure energy before it became visible to our physical eyes. This book explains, in clear detail, how one healer learned to work in the arena of energy to change what is being manifested. Others can follow in her path, or make their own. Even for those who choose not to be healers, the understanding that the world of physical form is only a tiny portion of what is occurring around us is profoundly life-enhancing. You cannot read this book without realizing that the potential of being human is huge, and the ability to choose joy lies within us all.

The first practical guide to the transformative uses of salvia • Explains how salvia connects you with your higher purpose and aids you in envisioning your unique path in life • Describes appropriate methods of use, a shamanic diet to increase effectiveness, and the meaning of the symbols experienced during salvia’s ecstatic embrace • Explores recent clinical research into salvia’s long-term positive psychological effects and its potential as a treatment for Alzheimer’s, depression, and addiction Salvia divinorum has been used since ancient times by the Mazatec shamans of Mexico for divination, vision quests, and healing. Known by many names--nearly all associated with the Virgin Mary, who has come to symbolize the spirit of salvia--this plant ally is now regarded as the most powerful natural hallucinogen. Providing the first practical guide to the shamanic, spiritual, and therapeutic uses of salvia, Ross Heaven shares his in-depth quest to connect with the spirit of this plant teacher. He explores recent clinical research into its many long-term psychological effects, such as increased insight and self-confidence, improved mood and concentration, and feelings of calmness and connection with nature, as well as salvia’s potential for combating diseases like Alzheimer’s, depression, and even cocaine addiction. Reviewing the traditional Mazatec ceremonies surrounding salvia’s harvest and use, Heaven describes appropriate methods of consumption, typical dosages, and the shamanic diet he used to increase salvia’s effectiveness. Examining firsthand accounts of salvia journeys from around the world, he decodes the meaning of the symbolic images experienced during salvia’s ecstatic embrace and details the interplay between salvia and the lucid dreaming state. Comparing salvia to ayahuasca and the San Pedro cactus, Heaven explains that salvia’s greatest strength as a shamanic plant ally lies in its ability to connect you with your higher purpose and aid you in envisioning your unique path in life.

This book is the first to identify an interpretive path through Paleolithic cave art that can provide plausible meaning to the animal figures in the Lascaux cave in France. The artwork was created during a period described as the Creative Explosion, spanning from 35,000 to 11,000 BC. The author has found that the artists, or shamans, have left clear evidence of aspects of their worldview and by using ethological evidence, such as a bison shedding its winter coat to identify spring as the season portrayed in a specific panel, he adds a level of certainty to his interpretations. In sum, this book argues that the cave art describes the journey of the soul from the spirit world to the natural world and back, and that it identifies a spectrum of consciousness involving the five traditional senses: sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing. Moreover, the book explores the hunting strategies employed early survival groups which are depicted in the cave art. The role of the shamans’ impact on the artwork is also addressed.
