Excerpt from Essays in Freedom and Rebellion Naturally, I like to dedicate this little book to my many friends in the United States, and I can only wish it might be taken as some return for the pleasure their charm and intellectual sympathy have given me. It is but a collection of short essays written from time to time during the last fifteen or twenty years, as occasion suggested. But the essays do truly represent thoughts and observations gathered in the course of a varied and active life, which may now, unfortunately, be called long. There was an old Greek who boasted that all his life he had folllowed War and the Muses. For more than thirty years I too have followed and studied War, but no love of adventure or exercise of any military faculty I possess has ever blinded me to War's inevitable abomination. From childhood I have followed the Muses with passionate worship as the revealers of hidden realities in Nature and human Life. But Nature and human Life have been more to me than the highest imaginations of the Muses themselves, and a fulness of Life, transfused with a poignant delight in Nature, has been my reward. Excerpt from The Tocsin of Revolt: And Other Essays They are self-centered and impatient of con trol. They are inclined to boast themselves as the foes of tradition and as the enemies of con vention. They claim a large freedom for them selves; and, like the Puritans of old, they are prone to deny a like freedom to others. Their opinions may be half-baked, but their prejudices are case-hardened. They see no reason to sus peet that there may be interstices in their om niscience. They feel assured in their juvenile energy that they know it all; and they are not yet old enough to have found out that the man who knows it all does not know much, does not indeed know himself, which is the be ginning oi knowledge. In their callow imma turity they would only sniff contemptuously if they happened to hear the oft quoted saying of the Master of Trinity, that we are none of us infallible - not even the youngest of us. NOBEL PRIZE WINNER • Twenty-three political essays that focus on the victims of history, from the fallen maquis of the French Resistance to the casualties of the Cold War. In the speech he gave upon accepting the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957, Albert Camus said that a writer "cannot serve today those who make history; he must serve those who are subject to it." Resistance, Rebellion and Death displays Camus' rigorous moral intelligence addressing issues that range from colonial warfare in Algeria to the social cancer of capital punishment. But this stirring book is above all a reflection on the problem of freedom, and, as such, belongs in the same tradition as the works that gave Camus his reputation as the conscience of our century: The Stranger, The Rebel, and The Myth of Sisyphus.

Excerpt from Essays in Freedom Spaniards kept in Cadiz harbour, because it was so much too costly to waste on war; and Of being im prisoned at Ceuta, to avoid stoning at the hands of patriotic convicts, because I wished to inform you from personal investigation whether it would be for our country's advantage to accept that African fortress and penal settlement in exchange for Gibraltar. My next foreign experience in your service must have been at some police riots in county Mayo, where many fine and eloquent heads were broken. And then at the siege Of Fort Chabrol in Paris, where I may claim to have influenced the course Of French history by startling a hen so much that she flew over the fortress wall to the relief Of the garrison. I Often thought Of that generous accident with pleasure when a few months later I was myself besieged but found no kindly hen flying over the Ladysmith defences to vary our diet of horse and water. Time eats all things, and in time came our entrance into Pretoria, but even then it was two years before I could range over the wasted lands, and see our soldiers with happy sentiment forgiving the men and women whose country they had desolated. 2005 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Emma Goldman called Voltairine de Cleyre "the most gifted and brilliant anarchist woman America ever produced." Yet her writings and speeches on anarchism and feminism—as radical, passionate, and popular at the time as Goldman's—are virtually unknown today. This important book brings de Cleyre's eloquent and incisive work out of undeserved obscurity. Twenty-one essays are reprinted here, including her classic works: "Anarchism and the American Tradition," "The Dominant Idea," and "Sex Slavery." Three biographical essays are also included: two new ones by Sharon Presley and Crispin Sartwell, and a rarely reprinted one from Emma Goldman. At a time when the mainstream women's movement asked only for the right to vote and rarely challenged the status quo, de Cleyre demanded an end to sex roles, called for economic independence for women, autonomy within and without marriage, and offered a radical critique of the role of the Church and State in oppressing women. In today's world of anti-globalization actions, de Cleyre's anarchist ideals of local self-rule, individual conscience, and decentralization of power still remain fresh and relevant.
