Excerpt from German Ideals of to-Day: And Other Essays on German Culture The essays and sketches brought together in this book deal with what may be called the higher life of modern Germany. For even in so far as they are concerned with earlier epochs of literary or artistic development, they consider these earlier phases only in their relation to the life of the present. Taken as a whole, they form perhaps a slight contribu tion to the psychology of the German national mind. This volume provides a valuable contribution to our knowledge of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century intellectual life inside and outside Germany. —Prof. Karl S. Guthke, Harvard University This elegant collection of essays ranges across eighteenth and nineteenth-century thought, covering philosophy, science, literature and religion in the ‘Age of Goethe.’ A recognised authority in the field, Nisbet grapples with the major voices of the Enlightenment and gives pride of place to the figures of Lessing, Herder, Goethe and Schiller. These eleven essays range widely in their compass of thought and intellectual discourse, dealing incisively with themes including the philosophical implications of literature and the relationship between religion, science and politics. The result is an accomplished reflection on German thought, but also on its rebirth, as Nisbet argues for the relevance of these Enlightenment thinkers for the readers of today. The first half of this collection focuses predominantly on eighteenth-century thought, where names like Lessing, Goethe and Herder, but also Locke and Voltaire, feature. The second has a wider chronological scope, discussing authors such as Winckelmann and Schiller, while branching out from discussions of religion, philosophy and literature to explore the sciences. Issues of biology, early environmentalism, and natural history also form part of this volume. The collection concludes with an examination of changing attitudes towards art in the aftermath of the ‘Age of Goethe.’ The essays in this volume have been previously published separately, but are brought together in this collection to present Nisbet’s widely-acclaimed perspectives on this fascinating period of German thought. It will be of interest to scholars and students of the intellectual life of Europe during the Enlightenment, while its engaging and lucid style will also appeal to the general reader.

Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Collected and Republished: Jean Paul Friedrich Richter; State of German Literature; Life and Writings of Werner To speak without figure, this mode of life writing has its disadvantages. For one thing, the composition cannot well be what the critics call harmonious and, indeed, Herr Dor. Ing's transitions are often abrupt enough. The hero changes his object and occupation from page to page, often from sen tence to sentence, in the most unaccountable way a pleasure journey, and a sickness 'of fifteen years, are despatched with equal brevity in a moment you find him married, and the father of three fine children. He dies no less suddenly -he is studying as usual, writing poetry, receiving visits, full of life and business, when instantly some paragraph Opens under him, like one of the trap-doors in the Vision of fliirza, and he drops, without note of preparation, into the shades below. Perhaps, indeed, not forever; we have instances of his rising after the funeral, and winding up his affairs. The time has been that, when the brains were out, the man would die but Doring orders these things differently. Excerpt from History of German Literature The plan in preparing this work has been to produce an elementary work for those who desire to inform themselves in regard to the great men and the important works of German literature. I have endeavored briefly to show how important epochs have developed, to furnish short biographies of the leaders connected with these epochs, and to present concise outlines of their important works. For the convenience of those unfamiliar with German, I have endeavored to reproduce a large number of titles in English. A large portion of the book, printed eight years ago, and since used as a text-book in eight consecutive college classes, has demonstrated its usefulness in my own work; and in the hope that it may do similar service for others, I have revised and completed it. While numerous and various authorities have constantly been consulted, I wish to acknowledge indebtedness to Scherer's Geschichte der deutschen Litteratur, and more especially to Konig's Deutsche Litteraturgeschichte and his Abriss der deutschen Litteraturgeschichte, upon which much of the work is based, and from which a portion of the illustrations have been reproduced. Only illustrations of an authentic or historical nature have been admitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
