The economic arguments of Frederic Bastiat are cogent, concise and easy to follow. If you think government spending is a more productive use of taxpayer money than allowing the taxpayer to spend it, Bastiat provides an awakening. If you already lean libertarian you'll find plenty of ammunition for discussions with liberal friends. Bastiat uses the simplest examples to make the most complex issues easy to understand. He makes economics fun. Essays on Economy by Bastiat is a great addition to, or replacement for, the writings of Ayn Rand.

"These Essays are written with beautiful clearness, and from abundant knowledge....It is a small volume, but worth a large sum." -Leader "The reputation of Bastiat's 'Essays on Political Economy' was made years ago, and is still admitted among both the friends and enemies of free trade to be of the highest order....We know of no other book which we would more freely commend to the inquirer than this series of selections from Bastiat." -New Outlook "The laws of an abstruse science have never been made more clear, or expressed more forcibly." -Cincinnati Commercial "Of all the numerous writers who of late years have undertaken the task of expounding Political Economy, it is conceded that none have equaled the late M. Frederic Bastiat in the skill, and force, and lucidity with which he laid bare to men of average intelligence the elementary principles of the science. His works have become classical in this department of literature, and readers who found find in Adam Smith, and Ricardo, and even Mill, only cumulative evidence of the dry and uninteresting nature of the 'dismal science,' will turn to these brief, simple, and homely expositions with never-failing pleasure and satisfaction." -The Eclectic Magazine

" My object in this treatise is to examine into the real nature of the Interest of Capital, for the purpose of proving that it is lawful, and explaining why it should be perpetual. This may appear singular, and yet, I confess, I am more afraid of being too plain than too obscure. I am afraid I may weary the reader by a series of mere truisms. But it is no easy matter to avoid this danger, when the facts with which we have to deal are known to every one by personal, familiar, and daily experience..."

Essays on Political Economy, The Economic Concept of Opportunity Cost, Complete New Edition, By M. Frederic Bastiat, Claude Frédéric Bastiat; 30 June 1801 – 24 December 1850, was a French classical liberal theorist, political economist, and member of the French assembly. He was notable for developing the important economic concept of opportunity cost, and for penning the influential Parable of the Broken Window. His ideas have gone on to provide a foundational basis for libertarian and the Austrian schools of thought. Bastiat was born in Bayonne, Aquitaine, a port town in the south of France on the Bay of Biscay, on 30 June 1801. His father, Pierre Bastiat, was a prominent businessman in the town. His mother died in 1808 when Frederic was seven years old. His father moved inland to the town of Mugron with Frederic following soon after. The Bastiat estate in Mugron had been acquired during the French Revolution and had previously belonged to the Marquis of Poyanne. Pierre Bastiat died in 1810, leaving Frederic an orphan. He was taken in by his paternal grandfather and his maiden aunt, Justine Bastiat. He attended a school in Bayonne, but his aunt thought poorly of it and so enrolled him in Saint-Sever. At 17, he left school at Sorèze to work for his uncle in his family's export business. It was the same firm where his father had been a partner. Economist Thomas DiLorenzo suggests that this experience was crucial to Bastiat's later work since it allowed young Frederic to acquire first-hand knowledge of how regulation can affect markets. Sheldon Richman notes that "he came of age during the Napoleonic wars, with their extensive government intervention in economic affairs."
