This profusely illustrated reference guide offers students and nature lovers a fundamental understanding of all plant life, from the tallest trees to tiny fungal growths. It explains plant formation, growth, and reproduction, both in the wild, and in cultivated fields and plant nurseries. Cross-section illustrations show the parts of fruits and flowers and explain seed germination. Plant life is also presented within the larger context of the Earth's ecosystem. The influence of climates is shown with focus on how plant life differs in desserts, rain forests, and temperate zones. Plants are seen as sources of food, as floral and garden decoration, as wood for lumber, and even as fiber for the manufacture of cloth and rope. The book is filled with photos, artwork, and easy-to-read diagrams and charts, all in full color. It makes a fine reference book for classrooms and school libraries.

This good-looking, information-packed atlas has been designed with space-age skywatchers in mind. It's filled with full-color photos, sky charts, and vivid full-color art renditions of objects in outer space. Diagrams and illustrations explain the origins of the universe and our solar system. Photos taken from powerful telescopes capture visions of comets, nebulae, stars being born, distant galaxies, the surface of our Sun, and the earth's neighboring planets. The composition of the Earth, as well as other planets, is shown and discussed. Also shown and explained are both ancient and modern telescopes, including giant, state-of-the-art radiotelescopes located in various parts of the world. The book's final section shows and discusses the history of space exploration, starting with early twentieth-century experiments in rocket science, and extending to the international manned space station currently under construction. Here's a great volume for amateur astronomers of all ages, and a fine textbook supplement for high school science classes.

This work, published in two volumes, contains descriptions of the wood and bark anatomies of 3000 dicotyledonous plants of 120 families, highlighting the anatomical and phylogenetic diversity of dicotyledonous plants of the Northern Hemisphere. The first volume principally treats families of the Early Angiosperms, Eudicots, Core Eudicots and Rosids, while the second concentrates on the Asterids. Presented in Volume 1 are microsections of the xylem and phloem of herbs, shrubs and trees of 1200 species and 85 families of various life forms of the temperate zone along altitudinal gradients from the lowland at the Mediterranean coast to the alpine zone in Western Europe. The global perspective of the findings is underlined by the analysis of 500 species from the Caucasus, the Rocky Mountains and Andes, the subtropical zone on the Canary Islands, the arid zones in the Sahara, in Eurasia, Arabia and Southwest North America, and the boreal and arctic zones in Eurasia and Canada. The presence of annual rings in all life forms demonstrates that herbs and dwarf shrubs are an excellent tool for the reconstruction of annual biomass production and the interannual dynamic of plant associations. The common principle of the anatomical expression of secondary growth is a key factor in understanding evolution and adaptation processes in all life forms, from the 2 cm tall whitlow grass (Draba arctica) in the arctic to the 40 m tall beech (Fagus sylvatica) in Central European managed forests. The study opens vast fields of research for dendrochronology, wood anatomy, taxonomy and ecology.
