This report contains hindcast wave information that is applicable to many planning and design purposes on Lake Erie. Historical wind data from four stations along Lake Erie served as input to the numerical hindcast model, and significant wave heights were calculated for 5-, 10-, 20-, 50-, and 100-yr return periods. These results are provided in tabular form for 24 points along the Lake Erie shoreline. The mean significant period for each of these wave heights is also given. Information is provided for four seasons of the year (January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-December) and is separated into three approach directions relative to shore. (Author).

This report provides a state-of-the-art review of the climate change effects on lake hydrodynamics and water quality. Most of the engineering cases in this book deal with the ability of existing infrastructure to cope with extreme weather conditions. The case studies are intended to illustrate the advancement in modeling research on lake hydrodynamics, thermal stratification, pollutant transport, and water quality by highlighting the climate change aspects in the application of these techniques. Topics include climate and lake responses, lake thermodynamics, large-scale circulation, wind-waves on large lakes, great lakes ice cover, and water quality.

This volume represents the first decision support book aimed at water quality management for lakes and reservoirs. The book offers both a retrospective view (in terms of summarizing past work) and a prospective view (in terms of forecasting the greater use of such models as part of much needed environmental decision support systems). The concepts of lake and reservoir simulation modeling, as well as the concepts of decision support systems, formalized within the information systems discipline, are supported by a wealth of case studies. Case studies in the early chapters concentrate more on the physical (dynamic and thermodynamic) parameters, while later chapters stress the need for a more detailed representation of the biology and chemistry. Other case studies emphasize the management use of the model. New tools and concepts are also presented to facilitate the transfer of case studies presented in this volume from the arena of research to that of operational and planning management. Water quality managers, research scientists, and water engineers will find this volume an exciting source of new ideas and concepts.
