DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe perception of Europeans of the world and of the peoples beyond Europe has become in recent years the subject of intense scholarly interest and heated debate both in and outside the academy. So, too, has the concern with how it was that those peoples who were variously ’discovered’, and then, as often as not, colonised, understood the strangers in their midst. This volume attempts to cover both these topics, as well as to provide a number of crucial articles on the difficulties faced by modern historians in understanding the complex, relationship between ’them’ and ’us’. Inevitably such relationships not only changed over time, they also varied greatly from culture to culture. The articles, therefore cover most of the areas with which the European world came into contact from the earliest Portuguese incursions into Africa in the mid fifteenth century until the explorations of Cook and Bougainville in the Pacific in the late eighteenth. It ranges, too, from Brazil to Russia, from Tahiti to China.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKModern European economic history is marked by an endeavor to transcend the traditional national case study approach, to use comparisons and to deploy economic theory in order to draw the manifold and diverse experiences of the regions, countries and multicultural empires of Europe onto a unified frame of reference. These two volumes exemplify this modern approach. This Volume 5, of the eleven part set entitled Industrial Revolutions contains thirteen papers, with an introduction, which adopt and apply a conceptual and explicitly comparative approach to European economic history as a whole. Volume 5 includes sixteen national case studies, again organized around or set within the context of theoretical principles and ideas derived largely from macroeconomic theory, social accounting, productivity measurement and regional analysis.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book deals with the geological record and the evolution of ideas concerning the Variscan orogenic belt in France and neighboring regions. Volume 1 is based on a general introduction concerning the imprint of the Variscan period on the geology of France, as well as on the particularities of the study of this ancient orogen. A history of the concepts applied to the Variscan belt is proposed in order to consider this orogen in the history of Earth Sciences. A paleogeodynamic analysis of the Variscan cycle sets the general framework for the evolution of the orogen, which is then tackled through the prism of the magmatic, metamorphic and tectonic record of the early phases (from Cambrian to Lower Carboniferous). Volume 2 proposes an analysis of the late evolution of the Variscan orogenic belt, reflecting its dismantling in a high-temperature context during the Upper Carboniferous and Permian. The sedimentary archives are described, as well as the questions raised by the specificities of this ancient orogen.
