The tongue, the littlest member of the human body is a mighty instrument. It holds the power of life or death. It can sow a world of iniquity or it can release a flood of blessings. Yet many fail to realize the inherent dangers it presents, or its defiling nature if untamed. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: -James 3:5-7 The unbridled tongue can provoke strife, contention, division, and war. It's an unruly evil full of deadly poison and spreads corruption. "Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners." -1 Corinthians 15:33 Man has successfully tamed other members of God's creation, yet the tongue he is unable to tame. "But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison." -James 3:8 An unbridled tongue can open the way for diseases to manifest in the life of a believer by crushing or wounding the spirit. It can block the blessings of God from being realized, because of doubt and unbelief. Or it can release a wave of shame and guilt which can eliminate hope. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. -Matthew 5:37 If your heart's desire is to put your tongue under the Lordship of Jesus . . . if you want to eliminate evil and idle words . . . if you are ready to heal thy tongue and bridle it, then this devotional is for you.

Caleb Smith explores the confessions, trial reports, maledictions, and martyr narratives that juxtaposed law and conscience in antebellum America’s court of public opinion and shows how writers portrayed struggles for justice as clashes between human law and higher authority, giving voice to a moral protest that transformed American literature.

There is a resounding call in Hebrews, which we cannot forget without going astray: "Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach" (13:13). This is a summons to serve Christ the Redeemer-King fully and faithfully, without compromise. In our time, it calls for a break, not only with the prevailing culture of humanistic statism and its messianic claims and pretensions, but also a wayward church that has made itself the handmaiden to Christ's enemies. When James, in his epistle, says that faith without works is dead, he tells us that faith is not a mere matter of words, but it is of necessity a matter of life. We are dead men if we no longer can breathe, and we are spiritually dead if our faith is unaccompanied by works. Too many churches are like graveyards because too many members have no living faith. "Pure religion and undefiled" requires Christian charity and action. Anything short of this is a self-delusion. James's letter is a corrective the church needs badly. Jude similarly recalls us to Jesus Christ's apostolic commission, "Remember ye the words which have been spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ" (v. 17). Jude's letter is usually classified as an apocalyptic tract, but we cannot forget that all the Bible speaks of a division between fallen and redeemed humanity, between the saved and the lost, of the necessity for a new creation beginning with us, and of the inescapable triumph of the Kingdom of God.
