Excerpt from Exhibition of the Etched Work of Rembrandt, and of Artists of His Circle: Together With Engravings, Etching, Etc;, From Paintings and Sketches by Him; Principally From the Collection of Mr. Henry F. Sewall of New York, April 26 to June 30, 1887 As to Mr. Haden's theories concerning the authenticity of some of the plates attributed to Rembrandt, these can easily be tested by those desiring to do so by the aid of this exhibition, as a number of the plates by Van Vliet Bo], and Lievens, mentioned by him in his Monograph, are shown in it. How far these theories are sustained by the test, cannot be discussed here. Mr. Haden himself, in the prefatory Note to his second edition, admits that he has gone too far, or has at least ventured too much into detail as to the various etchers possibly involved. But it is clear that all the work which still goes under Rembrandt's name cannot be by him, or cannot now be in the condi tion in which he himself left it.
