The purpose of this textbook is to provide a basic understanding of scientific principles to help people and students who are interested in entering various professions and occupations involving chemistry and biology, scientific method, atomic theory, molecules and moles, the periodic table of elements, pH in terms of acids and bases, and organic chemistry. We shall also look at living things, cells, cell division, anatomy, and physiology (with particular emphasis on the cardiovascular system, circulatory system, the central nervous system, respiratory system, and the lymphatic system as it relates to immunology). There will be some discussion about nutrition, as well as a survey of genetics including the structures of DNA, duplication of DNA, RNA structure, and protein synthesis. There will be a very brief discussion of basic physics, optics, sound, astronomy, geology, and meteorology (which will help us understand how weather forecasters determine our weather from day to day). Some mention of African American men and women who made major contributions to math and science is included to let people know that regardless of one’s color, we all have the ability to handle various professions and occupations in science or math at any level. High school students, community college students, and people who desire a basic understanding of science, as it relates to our everyday living, are encouraged to read this book. Thank you for your time.

"A three-volume encyclopedia containing more than 300 signed entries, Discoveries in Modern Science covers the most important discoveries in the fields of biology, physics, and astronomy, intended to meet the needs of students and educators in high schools, community colleges, and four-year colleges, as well as the interested layperson. It represents a wide range of disciplines: biology, medicine, paleontology, oceanography, ecology, geology, linguistics, volcanology, meteorology, and others. Entries rigorously and thoroughly present key scientific concepts, in the context of accessible narratives and rich photojournalism. The set presents an in-depth treatment of "curiosity-led science," as well as directed research that led to important inventions and technologies. All entries provide cross references to related entries in the encyclopedia and a bibliography of resources either cited in the entry and/or to aid in further research"--

Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life and hold the key to solving many of humanity's most pressing current and future challenges. The United States' position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields. To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field. A Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines a broad set of expectations for students in science and engineering in grades K-12. These expectations will inform the development of new standards for K-12 science education and, subsequently, revisions to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development for educators. This book identifies three dimensions that convey the core ideas and practices around which science and engineering education in these grades should be built. These three dimensions are: crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science through their common application across science and engineering; scientific and engineering practices; and disciplinary core ideas in the physical sciences, life sciences, and earth and space sciences and for engineering, technology, and the applications of science. The overarching goal is for all high school graduates to have sufficient knowledge of science and engineering to engage in public discussions on science-related issues, be careful consumers of scientific and technical information, and enter the careers of their choice. A Framework for K-12 Science Education is the first step in a process that can inform state-level decisions and achieve a research-grounded basis for improving science instruction and learning across the country. The book will guide standards developers, teachers, curriculum designers, assessment developers, state and district science administrators, and educators who teach science in informal environments.
