A collection of ten papers from the V.A. Streklov Institute of Mathematics, Academy of Sciences, USSR, is presented which treats various problems in the geometric theory of functions of a complex variable. Attention is given to the theory of kernels of a multiply-connected domain to investigated extremal properties of conformal schlicht mappings of a multiply-connected onto mutually non-overlapping domains. The problem of mutual growth of the coefficients of one close of p-sheeted functions is discussed in a paper by Ye. G. Goluzina, while the problems of the minimum transfinite diameter of a continum containing three fixed points, and new variation formulas for Stieltjes integrals has been extended by G.V. Kuz'mina and Lebedev-Aleksandrov respectively. Theorems and proofs are presented through-out. (Author).

This monograph provides a thorough treatment of parameter-dependent extremal problems with local minimum values that remain unchanged under changes of the parameter. The authors consider the theory as well the practical treatment of those problems, both in finite-dimensional as well as in infinite-dimensional spaces. Various applications are considered, e.g., variational calculus, control theory and bifurcations theory. Thorough treatment of parameter-dependent extremal problems with local minimum values. Includes many applications, e.g., variational calculus, control theory and bifurcations theory. Intended for specialists in the field of nonlinear analysis and its applications as well as for students specializing in these subjects.

This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fme subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.
