In recent years, advanced composite materials have been frequently selected for aerospace applications due to their light weight and high strength. Polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials have also been increasingly considered for use in elevated temperature applications, such as supersonic vehicle airframes and propulsion system components. A new generation of high glass-transition temperature polymers has enabled this development to materialise. Clearly, there is a requirement to better understand the mechanical behaviour of this class of composite materials in order to achieve widespread acceptance in practical applications. This book presents and discusses the results and apparent shortcomings in studies of levels of fatigue in polymer matrix composites.

Thanks to their low density and tailored properties, polymer matrix composites are attractive candidates for a large number of industrial applications ranging from aerospace to transportation and energy. However, the behaviour of polymer-based materials is strongly affected by a number of environmental factors. Environmental Degradation in Industrial Composites provides vital information on the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, liquid and gas exposure, electrical fields and radiations, and how micro- and micromechanical calculations during design and manufacture must take these effects into account. The book concludes with reviews on standard and specific testing methods for the various environmental factors and their combinations, helping mechanical/materials engineers and specifiers to predict possible changes due to environmental conditions. Each chapter is supplemented by industrial case studies to help in the understanding of degradation of composites in real life situations. This book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracy This book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracy

Aerospace and naval applications of polymers in conditions once thought too harsh for them, take center stage in the survey of how polymer composites react to environmental conditions. A dozen papers from a symposium in San Diego, October 1991, describe damage mechanisms and failure, materials behavior under combined effects, and constitutive models, sometimes considering polymers as a whole, but more often specific groups or composites. No index. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Thermo-mechanical fatigue occurs when a component is exposed to thermal cycling under mechanical constraint and or superimposed mechanical loading. Thermo-mechanical loading is an increasingly common service condition for polymer matrix composite materials. Unfortunately, little or no information is available regarding the behavior of polymer composites subject to this loading condition. The present thesis research program was undertaken to evaluate the effects of mechanical constraint on the response of polymer matrix composites during thermal cycling. Analytical and experimental techniques were used to characterize the response of carbon fiber reinforced cyanate ester (IM6/ BT3008) and bismaleimide (IM7/5240-4) composites. Cross-ply laminates were subjected to thermal cycles from 24 to 177 deg C in the unconstrained, fully- constrained and over-constrained conditions. Laminate response, damage mechanisms and residual compressive properties were characterized for each material and degree of constraint. Predicted ply stress distributions are significantly different for the various degrees of constraint and are highly sensitive to temperature-dependent lamina properties and laminate stress free temperature. Predictions of laminate response correlate well with experimental results. Deviations are apparent at elevated temperature which are attributed to the effects of time-dependent deformation.

High performance polymeric composites were investigated for their utilization in more hostile conditions in terms of temperature, humidity, and cycling. A number of commercially available composite systems and model systems developed in the Polymeric Composites Laboratory were selected in this study. The addition of rubber to the cyanate ester matrices was found to reduce the rate of matrix deterioration but caused a substantial increase in water uptake. The addition of a thermoplastic modifier to the cyanate ester matrices increased the thermal stability of the matrices more than the elastomer modifier, however, it did not affect the degradation of the material since degradation was mainly governed by the cyanate ester network. Fiber reinforcement and solvent content of an epoxy matrix composite changed the water absorption rate and mechanical properties of the composite. The changes observed in the hygrothermal cycling studies were examined with the transient simulated laminate methodology using unsymmetric laminates. Finally, a model using equivalent cycle time combined with time-temperature superposition theory was proposed to study long-term properties of composites.
