A humorous fantasy novel with elements of the detective genre, Fisher of Devils accepts common Christian beliefs and then does unspeakable things with them Opening in Eden with God demonstrating the use of Adam's unwelcome "quaint appendage," and ending in Heaven with the weirdest party of all time, in between it takes us on a riotous tour of the Afterworld. The rascally St Peter and his psychotic bodyguard St George take on Satan and a bunch of seriously pissed-off Fallen Angels. Devil and Saint have their hidden agendas, but are gradually forced into a dubious partnership. When not trying to destroy or save each other, they have to confront, inter alia: the impeccably mannered Beast of the Apocalypse; bones with a grudge; treachery by Satan's own ministers; rebellion by the original cannibalistic inhabitants of Hell; lovelorn souls in vats in Limbo; a rigged Second Judgement; conscience-stricken serpents; the gurgling (and deadly) Immaculate Infant; the Virgin Mary with her hideous secret. And at the back of both their minds is the memory of a certain woman . . .

Some critics in England and France have long maintained that British director Terence Fisher, whose films dominated world markets in the 1950s and 60s, was one of the greatest directors of fantasy films in history. Since his death in 1980, Fisher's reputation has grown from relative obscurity and his influence on the development of the modern horror film has been widely recognized. However, Fisher's importance should not be limited to the context of the fantasy and horror film genres. His films should also be recognized as expressions of his generalizations about human spirituality. This critical study of Fisher's films begins with an introduction that provides biographical information on his film career, summaries of all of the films he directed and examples of his impact on contemporary cinema. All of Fisher's films are analyzed in terms of their Christian and religious themes as well as their mythical sources. Chapters are devoted to Fisher's work on the subjects of Frankenstein, Dracula, curses (The Devil Rides Out), the ancient goddess (The Gorgon), the divided self (The Man Who Could Cheat Death) and the redeemer hero (The Stranglers of Bombay). The concluding chapter analyzes the role and influence of Biblical narratives in Fisher's films. Also included is a filmography; the work is fully indexed.

The jungle skills of Major Philip Melville were extraordinary and had earned him the reputation of being the most accomplished Special Forces leader in Vietnam. Shortly after the fall of Saigon he accepted one final mission. He led a squad back into ‘Nam to rescue a group of wounded soldiers and the civilians who were sheltering them. He had been told the conquering North Vietnamese had no knowledge of the wounded group. This intelligence would prove false. Even without this complication Philip recognized the extreme danger of his task but would only later learn of its other ominous aspect. Mei Li, the young leader of the civilians had recently inherited a fabulous fortune, which had come to the attention of the brutal, avaricious General Tran. He had sent his forces to track down Mei Li and plunder the treasure. This mission would ultimately leave Philip with deep mental scars. Many months later as his scars were slowly healing; he was persuaded to abandon the peace he was finally enjoying in New Mexico to find out who was threatening Mei Li’s life in Hong Kong. There he would learn not only much of its colorful history, but also its dangerous present. Far from its attractive tourist areas, in its backwaters and dingy side alleys, he would have to face its most fiendish triad and would quickly understand that in this environment life was cheap. This too was a jungle where death awaited those who interfered with its triad gangs. Old scars would be reopened as he undertook this dangerous task. He would learn the root cause of his troubles in Vietnam and in Hong Kong would be the same - The Eyes of the Devil.

Essays on morality, mortality, and much more from the New York Times–bestselling author of The Selfish Gene and The God Delusion. This early collection of essays from renowned evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins is an enthusiastic declaration, a testament to the power of rigorous scientific examination to reveal the wonders of the world. In these essays, Dawkins revisits the meme, the unit of cultural information that he named and wrote about in his groundbreaking work, The Selfish Gene. Here also are moving tributes to friends and colleagues, including a eulogy for novelist Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy; correspondence with fellow biologist Stephen Jay Gould; commentary on the events of 9/11; and visits with the famed paleoanthropologists Richard and Meave Leakey at their African wildlife preserve. Ending with a vivid note to Dawkins’s ten-year-old daughter, reminding her to remain curious, ask questions, and live the examined life, A Devil’s Chaplain is a fascinating read by “a man of firm opinions, which he expresses with clarity and punch” (Scientific American).
