Excerpt from Five Years in the Sudan IN the year 1885 Gordon fell at Khartoum, and the Sudan passed into the hands of the Mahdi. In 1898, thirteen years later, the combined forces of England and Egypt met and defeated the hosts of the Khalifa at Omdurman. The regeneration of the Sudan may be dated from that year, though it was more than twelve months later that the Khalifa himself, making a desperate effort to regain his fallen power, died on the field of battle, and combined resistance on the part of the Sudanese ceased. Twelve years have therefore elapsed since the English entered the country: it is of the earlier part of this time that I have written.
